My 1995 Passage 42 has CNG and I want to convert to LPG. I intend to use a Trident LPG locker (2x 10lb tanks) from West Marine. The locker would fit perfectly in the Stb aft deck lazarette...BUT how does one get it into the lazarette.
Anyone ahe any ideas?

I bolted the locker to the stern rail because I didn't want to give up any locker space. Not a perfect solution. I also went with 2 10 lb. tanks

You also need to consider where you are going to put the overboard drain for the bottle storage compartment. has to be above the heeled over water line by a bit under all sea conditions.

Also, explain what you mean, "how do I get into the lazarette" As a lazarette it should have a hatch???? perhaps I'm missing something.

Thanks Bill..what I mean is; the lazarette is amply big enough for the propane locker, but the lazarette hatch is too small to allow the propane locker to pass through!

Thanks Silverbeard, my propane locker is for 2 x 10lb tanks. I agree the deck mounted option is not the best but it is an option.

The easiest solution may be to go to the largest single tank locker that may fit through the hatch. The important thing is would a single tank work for you? What is below and next to the lazarette? Would you have space to slide the tank in below decks if you cut a hole into the lazarette?

I mounted a 20lb fiberglass LP tank outside my rear rail sitting off an extension from rear coaming

If your a DIYer (and a propane tank will fit through the hatch!!!) you could glass in a section of the lazerette. then just drill a hole in the bottom/side to let the gas out and another one to get the hose out to the oven. use cardboard and tape to get a template for the walls knocked out then use the cardboard as the filler for the walls. Make the walls in the shop then install and fillet-glass in. make a nice hatch that is "gas tight" and your done. it is a lot easer then you might think IF you take your time getting the templates right. A single layer of deck cloth on each side will "get er done". Drain hole placement is key as it HAS to drain downward and OFF the boat but not let water in. Salt water and aluminum tanks are not good partners. Not real great with steel either

Thanks Bill, that is great information; as I said in a previous post reply a lot of measuring will be in order in the next while.

Hey Dreamtime
We are in the same situation as you. My wife and I got our 42 this last June and are also needing to convert to propane. Our original thought was also to put it in the starboard deck locker but I ran into the same as you, how to get a double box into the locker. Since I am over 1500 miles from the boat right now, I am not able to measure and see if a propane locker for a single 10 lb tank will go in. If it will we are thinking about installing a locker for a single tank and then rail mounting something to hold another 1 or 2 tanks. Please let me know what you come up with so I do not have to recreate the wheel!!
Thanks,
Tom
