I am in the Kingston (Ontario) area and looking to refill my stove's CNG tank. Bought a 1993 40.5 Legend in US this summer, then found out the tank was empty and I cannot find places to refill. Anyone had any luck around Lake Ontario or Montreal area?? Info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

Two things:

1) The place I used to fill my tanks in Ottawa has now closed. Leaving only Toronto locations. I would have had to have my tank pressure tested, before most would fill it, so I gave up and converted to propane 2 years ago. (I can certainly tell you the details of how I did the conversion if you like)
2) If you do find a place, I'd be happy to sell you a spare CNG tank (and a spare valve if you can find an appropriate take to fit in on!

Let me know if you want to talk.

Go ahead and convert to Propane now. The prices of the appliance and components are not going to be coming down. Irrespective of its properties availability of CNG and tanks for portable use in boats is dwindling . Why put up with aggravation now and a higher cost for conversion latter?

This is a couple years old, from the Georgian Bay Hunter Owners Assoc. not sure if still valid.

KMC in Scarborough at 416 299 3857. Before they will fill the tank, they will require that the tank has had a recent inspection and is fitted with a safety collar which can be installed by Camcarb at 4270 Weston Rd. in Weston; 416 745 1304. Flame-Tamer at 8058 Torbram Rd.; 905 791 3102 will do the inspection if necessary.

I just might be interested. Found a place in Rochester that does an empty tank for full tank exchange -not super cheap, but somewhat convenient since my tank likely goes back to when the boat was first bought. It's not incredibly far, but it's not that close either, so having two would probably be a good thing..

Us a car CNG station

You can construct a quick connect fitting that connects the tank to a car filling station hose. My boat came with one. Don't know if that is standard equipment on CNG boats but my hunter 37.5 also had a similar converter. It would not be very hard or expensive to build one and it gives you a much better price than tank exchange
I filled two 20 hour bottles up for around $2.50. I had the same two bottles exchanged for $75.00!!!
I have pix of the converter if you would like a peek.

I believe that I was in touch with the places noted above in TO and Mississauga, and was told I required the collar and a valid pressure test stamp. The automotive places in Kingston refused to fill anything for me that wasn't part of a car.

For all the grief required, and travel, and inconvenience when you run out, the cost of switching to propane is not so bad, and it improves the resale value of the boat. For my boat, the tank can be mounted under the starboard side stern cockpit seat, as it is open to the air, and satisfies the locker requirements. I re-ported my existing stove at nominal expense. The rest was the cost of 20' of hose, values, solenoids, and the trident gas detector switch panel and some time and effort to install.

Bill, I'd really like to see those pics. The tank pressure is about 2500psi, where does that pressure come from to get the CNG into the tank?
