I would like to change my stove from cng to propane. I have been told only the top burners and the oven burner need to be changed as well as the storage tanks and hose. Has anyone done this - can you tell me what you did and where you got the parts? Thanks... I have a 1985 Hunter 40.

The best people to answer your conversion question are at Sure Marine because they hold the CNG license. See link below. Converting the tanks and supply lines over to LP is not just a matter of changing parts, it's a redesign of the system, including sniffer. New tank installation setup must meet code, which among other things requres it to be "effectively" outside the boat (drain hole in lowest point of storage locker), etc. Get a copy of "NFPA 302: Fire Protection Standard for Pleasure and Commercial Motor Craft, 1998 Edition" for specific requirements.

propane conversion

We have a 1992 passage 42. I have cruised in the Caribbean on bareboat charters for years proir to buying our own boat with the idea of going back to the islands in the near future. The boat has a CNG system and I wanted to convert to propane because of lack of availability in the islands. The complexity of the conversion and expense is very significant. But the most difficult part was trying to figure out where to put the storage locker for a 20lb cylinder. I then realized that on all of our bareboat charters in the islands we had used the rail mounted MAGNA kettle grill with charcoal 95% of the time. We have decided to use the kettle grill with propane burner as our primary and keep our cng system for foul weather and baking. I have 4 cng bottles and I plan to mount 1 20lb. propane cylinder on deck. Please note as long as the propane bottle is in an open deck situation fume build-up should not be a problem. Propane is readily available in the islands.
