Tank exchange program

The company is Providence has a tank exchange program. You send an empty and then they return it full for a fee. Check their web site. There must a distributor somewhere near you. Isn't this a cool site? I just got a 40 that needs a ton of TLC and CNG. Let me know how long a tank full lasts. we went through one in two days. Is that normal? Or do I have a leak somewhere? Gene you must have a leak

I also have a H 40 with CNG. Although I dont live aboard I have spent four weeks on board and many weekends on one tank of CNG. I filled both tanks in Ft. Lauderdale last year and have used the stove and oven numerous times including daily on trips and still have one full. Gene you must have a leak somewhere. But thats what makes CNG safe it is lighter than air and therefore not as dangerous as propane.

CNG List

Art, Check out the Corpbrothers.com site. The have a list of CNG dealers, including three in Michigan. This list is not complete, but it is a good start. Some local gas companies will also fill your tank for much less money. A friend in Buffalo pays ten dollars to have his filled, and I payed an Amoco gas station in Ft. Lauderdale which fills city autos with natural gas engines 49 cents to fill my tank. Good luck in your search. Jack on S/V "Journey"

Jack, Where's that $.49 Amoco?

For $.49 its worth a drive up from Miami. Thanks.

Must be a leak

A tank on my boat will last 4 months or more. We use the boat (Legend 37) on weekends and also a two week summer cruise. We have no oven and use the propane grill a lot. Also, a full tank should contain 2250 psi. Check around with gas companies who may fill them. Sometimes companies who fill welding tanks, etc have those contacts. A fill at Corp Brothers in Providence costs about $15.00. Another thing we do is to shut off the tank valve and burn off the excess between uses. This is more a safety consideration, but if you have a leak, this will let you know. Keep an eye on the psi when you aren't using the stove/oven. If the psi drops, you know, for sure, taht you have a leak.

Gene...two answers..

If you ran through a tank of CNG in 2 days...the tank was almost empty or you definetly have a leak. A full tank of CNG would last me all summer long.

CNG Info

I have been told that you will get about one hour of burn time on one burner (on high) for each 100 psi in the tank. A full tank is about 2200 psi +/-. A tank exchange here in Seattle costs $21 or so. Gene, you should check the gauge and watch for a leak. It may help isolate the leak if you check it first with the safety solenoid switched off and then later with it on (without using the stove of course).

Patrick - Selonoid?

There is no selenoid on my CNG system. Should there be one? Except for the shutoff valve, the tank is exactly like a SCUBA tank - same construction materials (metal), size and working pressure. The shutoff valve is strictly manual with no selenoid.

CNG Sources

Art, We have found the local gas companies often have CNG pumps at selected locations to serve their CNG powered vehicles. In our case it required making up an adapter to connect their compression connector to our CNG tank (cost about $30). The cost to fill our tank to 2300psi was $.54 - that's right, 54 cents! You might want to start by calling your local gas company for sources in your area. Good luck, Bud Cook
