CNG Referigeration

I know there are saftey issues using propane for referigeration but what about CNG? This would seem to be just a matter of installing it and then not touching the flue. Has anybody heard of such a thing? Bill Roosa

Angle of Heel

Perhaps someone else can true this up, but it is my understanding they are sensitive to angles and will not operate if angled (such as a sailboat heeling). RD

CNG refers and angles

I looked into this and the story is the same as on an RV. You can use the "gas" refer while in motion but when you stop the RV MUST be leveled. Apperantly as long as the RV is in motion the sloshing allows it to keep working at an angle. When you stop at the campground the sloshing stops and the refer has to be level to work and not get "hot spots" and liquid plugs in the plumbing. I can see no reason why this would not work on a boat unless that noreaster really puts a tilt on the Bay ;-) Bill

Other thoughts

You would be introducing another system which contains ammonia in a corrosive environment. I would not take the chance that it could leak. The other consideration is that it would be prohibitively expensive to operate and the fuel tanks would take a lot of space. They would not operate too long on one tank and so it would need to be changed a lot. All of that is in addition to the issue of being level to function.

Solar approach

I looked into this at one point, not using CNG but using sun power to heat the liquid. It is a very complex and touchy thermal process and to work efficiently, or at all, the system does need to be level. That puts you into a gimbled system in a sailboat at best. Also, to use the sun, you need to be able to track it. I was going to use a type of fresnel lense to avoid having a complex tracking system. It would be nice to find a way to apply this approach to refrigeration on a boat. It would greatly reduce power consumption.
