Hunter Legend 35 Kingston
We have just purchased a 1987 Hunter Legend 35. It still has a CNG tank and a CNG stove (with broiler). We are now investigating where or whether we can get the tank filled. The previous owner (from Toronto) appears to have given up on the CNG system and was using a single burner portable propane stove. So far we know: - There is gas station in Kingston that can fill CNG cars (good ... a supply) - Our tank would need an adapter (not a big deal, maybe $200) - The operator of the station says he can only fill CNG tanks that are mounted in a vehicle (bad news). Questions: - Can anyone offer any advice on filling an using CNG tanks for marine use? The tank appears to be a standard 80 cf tank (looks like a scuba tank). - Other Legend owners! Has anyone converted a Legend 35 (or similar CNG equiped boats) to LPG? Where do people put their tank lockers? Chris

CNG

I have a Hunter Legend 37.5 with CNG. I called the local Gas Service Company and was directed to the maintenence shop. There a maintnence supervisor helped me but the needed adaptor and helps me fill my tank when needed. It cannot be filled from the station for motorized vehicles because the pressure generated by those stations is too great for the tanks and it would be dangerous to fill them. So far I have had no trouble having the supervisor at our local gas co maintenence facility fill my tank. If this source doesn't remain open to me, I guess I'll be up a creek.

I looked into converting, but decided to keep CNG

By the way, where is Kingston? In US or Canada? and what large city are you close to? Here near Seattle, there is also a town called Kingston, but I assume you are not in the Pacific Northwest. Yes, you will have to look around for a CNG fill station. Many marinas will also swap tanks with you. A full one for your empty one. Here in Seattle, there is only 1 place that fills the tanks, and they supply all the tanks for swap here in the Northwest. Yes, you can convert from CNG to LPG, but will take some work. Some parts will have to be changed starting from the tank, hoses, valves, and stove parts. You will also have to built a air tight locker to house your LPG tank. Your boat insurance may also be higher with LPG. I don't really know about that part. Also, do you have any idea how much cooking you are going to do per season? Depending on frequency, you may only have to look for a refilling station 2 or 3 times a year. Do a search in the archive. There has been a lot of discussions on this topic in the past.

propane installation

I have an 89 Legend 37 and it had CNG when I bought it. After several trips to Jacksonville, 2.5 hours away (and the closest source at that time), I decide to convert to propane. Installed a locker on the starboard shelf next to the aft berth (on the Legend 37 there are large shelves on both sides of the aft berth) and had a professional install the stove/oven conversion kit. I am very pleased with the installation. Can give details and photos if requested (I am in the owners directory).

Chris, our local marine supply place has...

a CNG tank exchange program. Bring in your empty tank and they give you a full one for about $28 US. Call around for one in your area. I also carry a spare tank that I picked up for $50 at Pacific Marine Exchange in Bellingham, WA. The two tanks give us about two months of daily use. Terry

Stb'd aft Cockpit Seat

If you ever do decide to change over from CNG to propane, take a look at the starboard aft cockpit seat - the one just behind the wheel which is open underneath. It appears to be a fiberglass unit that is screwed in and caulked so this could probably be easily converted to a propane tank location. One posibility is to put, say, a piano hinge somewhere along the side facing the walk-through to the stern and a latch on the other side. Run a hose from the low point of the new "locker" to the outside to meet code that should do it for the storage locker. Maybe put a stainless louver cover on the open side for cosmetics? With regard to CNG tank refills, maybe there is another fuel dealer in the area that would refill it for you? I had a CNG fuel dealer refill my tank once and wanted to get an adaptor so I contacted Shure Marine (?), the ones that hold the rights to the system, and they read me the riot act that they were the only ones that could refill the tanks. They threatened the CNG gas station with a law suit. That was many years ago when Shure was trying to build the business but in areas where they don't have dealers I don't see how they would mind if you went to a CNG gas station. On our Alaska trip we went for 76 days on ONE tank - thanks to my wife's cooking abilities. When shorepower was available we used a hot plate and when underway and motoring she'd use the engine room to heat certain items (a can of beans I remember once). We have practically never used the broiler partly because I think it would really go through the gas. By the way, here is a chartlet for Kingston WA (big Washington, not little washington!): http://mapserver.maptech.com/homepage/index.cfm?lat=47.79889&lon=-122.49694&scale=25000&zoom=50&type=0&icon=0&searchscope=dom&CFID=883595&CFTOKEN=41968917&scriptfile=http://mapserver.maptech.com/homepage/index.cfm&latlontype=DMS

In the same boat

I too had this problem of finding CNG. I had to resort to going around to all the hunter legend owners and asking them where they get there tanks refilled. You should also check the marinas locally as most CNG dealears will advertise on the bulliten boards. The guy I found is the only one (I know) for the entire Chesapeak Western shore!! But he does come to your boat.

CNG dificult to find

We had the same problem in the Montreal area. All distributors were gone, until I heard of one company running school buses on CNG. They charge only 1.25$ to fill a thank to 2800 psi ! no adaptor needed. We have 3 tanks and filling them all is normally below 4$ Can TOTAL... Maybe it is a good thing to keep looking for a potential supplier. CNG is inexpensive and probably safer than LPG.

$1.25 per tank, wow, what a deal

Maybe we can rent a truck, get all the CNG boaters to submit their tanks, and take a road trip to Montreal to get all of their refilled. They cost around $28 per tank around here. That is about 20 times the price. Too bad we can't find a adapter somewhere and connect it to our home gas line, along with a pump. Yes, CNG of much safer than LPG. I think you can put a lighted match match next to the tank nozzle, and it will not explode. I think. and not from personal experience.

CNG Distributors

Couldn't find any CNG distributors for eastern Canada (doesn't mean there aren't any - just couldn't find a listing) but for other areas, for info, here's what I found: Puget Sound and BC from the Sure Marine web site: http://www.suremarine.com/ then clik on "CNG Distributors" in the far left column. East coast: Corp Bros at http://www.corpbrothers.com/marine.htm Southern Calif: http://www.gas-systemsinc.com/pages/1/index.htm

cheap CNG

You're going to get sick when you hear this. On a recent trip from NJ to the FL Keys and back I re-loaded my CNG tank (without an adapter), while I waited, in FL at one of the FL gas utility companies for $1.35!!!!!. At that time that was the price of a gallon of gas. The tank was loaded to well over 2000 lbs psi. The CNG dealers have a real racket going up here. Places I have found for CNG exchange: Annapolis, MD; Havre de Grace, MD (Tidewater marina); Worton Creek, MD (Warton Creek Marina); Lockwood Marine near Asbury Park, NJ. I believe there is a place in Kent Island, MD and I know there are places in LI Sound. You may be able to aquire more information on www.safegas.com. Good Luck, Pat

Yeah, it sucks...

that we are touting CNG as an "alternative fuel", but no one can find it!!! Back in the early 80's, they were pumping it back in the ground in Texas because no one could/would use it. Oh yeah, Ted Kennedy doesn't want wind farms in his back yard either! Must be that he doesen't want to upset those payments from the OIL COMPANIES that the family owns.
