I just returned from the lake and right up until the storm hit had a wonderful sail. During the storm, I stepped on an open line clutch and broke the piece that lifts up and down. When I checked my owners manual on the deck hardware page, no mentiion of the clutch is made. My boat is a 1996 23.5. I may just have to replace the clutch with another model, but I was hoping to use the existing screw holes. I will check with Hunter Marine tomorrow, but was hoping someone has had a similar problem. Also, what is involved in removing and replacing the line clutch?

I think They are Spinlocks XTS

There is a drawining in the manul and a parts list in the corner that states the model number. Bad news is that model is discountinued not sure if the new one has teh same bolt pattern. I changed mine from a double to a triple I think I may still have the bouble around somwhere I can look at it to be sure. I am in the middle of redoing the kitchen and adding an extension to the dining room. My wife is very eager to motivate me to finish, so don't wait on me if you can help it.

I have the manual and understand the page you're talking about (deck hardware). However, it doesn't show a line clutch.

If you decide to replace them, take a look at Garhauer Marine. Good units with a good price. You can call them and they will give you the measurement for the mounting holes.

You best bet is to contact the mfg. and see if they still sell parts for you units.

I think These are the Replacements for Spinlocks XTS

I just ran out of mud for the drywall that will add another day to the project. Too hot to go sailing anyway another six weeks and it will be nice again.

I'll look in the morning for the clutch. If I remember right I bought mine out of the bargin bin at WM because the new line was coming in. That was in Biloxi so it was seven or eight probably nine years ago at least. I'd doubt Spinlock still has parts though that is a good idea maybe EBay?

Not Quite Right

They are Spinlock XA clutches but the XAS is a diect replacement for them. The triple makes the centerboard much more secure mine slipped down all the time. I added a teak block under them it keeps the lines up off of the deck and they both stay cleaner.

Re: Check Here for Parts

It woulld be great if I could just replace the handle. Far less expensive. I didn't look closely, but not sure how to get the old handle off?!?

Re: Check Here for Parts

Rick,

Thanks much for your help. I just ordered a replacement handle for my line clutch. They still have the XA replacement parts! Now if I can figure how to actually replace the handle. I assume since they sell a handle it can be replaced.

Re: Check Here for Parts

Just to let you in on the results. Thanks to Rick Webb, I was able to get a replacement handle for my line clutch. Spinlock also supplied instructions for replacement. All went well and the clutch is ready to go back on the boat.

Bill, the same thing happened to my clutch handle. As I was replacing it, I noticed the handle next to it was cracked. The crack was not visible while assembled. I was able to order another and replace it before it broke at a very bad time. It may pay you to closely inspect the others when you take the clutch apart. BrianW

Bill,

I replaced my 23-year old rope clutches today with Lewmar D-2 clutches. To remove them I removed the cabin head liner plate and unscrewed the nuts from the bolts fastened to the clutches. I then used removed the bolts and clutces. I then positioned the new clutches, drilled holes, injected sealer, installed and fastened bolts and then filled remaining holes and finished the fiberglass.
