I dont have a manual to my boat. How do I know if I can use a harness to pull myself or a lighter person ( I weigh 200 lbs) up the mast to reach a severed line.

Why do you think you need a manual to do it? Going aloft without a harness is just plain stupid.

explanation

I intend to use a harness. My point is that I am not sure if the mast or the size of my boat is adequate and/or intended to lift a person safely.

Going up the mast

If you are talking about a 23 foot Morgan, why don't you just lower the mast? I am assuming that it is deck stepped as most boats in that size range.

Nick, The force that the wind exerts on your mast when the wind is up is far far greater than your 200lbs can produce. If you don't feel comfortable climbing it, you can easily lower it and re-hoist.

climbing the mast - further explanation

Thanks for your replies. My mast is deck stepped but it does not have a bottom hinge so I thought it would be less cumbersome to climb the mast. Is there any real possibility that the pulley at the top of the mast can give way?

climbing the mast - further explanation

That sheeve at the masthead handles a lot more load than your body weight. There is virtually nothing on your boat that can't handle 200lbs. Even a flag halyard block(and they're really small) can handle it.

Stuck by lighting

Theres a possibility that you will get struck by lighting when you climb your mast. There a possibilty of anything breaking or going wrong. A 5/16 stay wire tensioned to 19 pounds, exerts a downward force of 870 pounds on your mast. since you have at least one on each side your mast already has about 1600 pounds of loading. A few turns of the turnbuckle will double that loading. Knowing this, do you think the mast will hold your body weight? THings also to consider, a empty coke can will support over 300 pounds if loaded evenly, but one touch to the side will collaspe it. 5/16 polyester yacht single braid breaking strength is approx 3000 lb, but a granny knot in it takes away 60% of its strength. Mr science here, uses two halyards( one for hoisting, one for backup), and a climbing harness to go up the mast. if you worry about a pully breaking you should inspect the whole mast for corrosion.
