How do you secure a 87 Hunter 23 to a dock? I use cable and cable ties in the anchor locker and tie the line to carabiners. However, I found one cable had broken, furtunately I had the wire doubled. Is there any way and where to install a cleat? The only place I can figure is in the center of the boat forward of the front hatch.

I added a folding cleat just behind the anchor locker to my H23. It's worked out REALLY well. The bolts go down into the Vberth and I made an mount for a TV that attaches to the bottom of them nicely as well! :)

Here's a video of the LED TV mounted to the bottom of that cleat using a 1" piece of aluminum about 2' long.

This is the folding cleat that I got. It was a fantastic purchase! Makes docking SO much easier, toss the spring line over it as we come in, grab the bow lines, done!

good choice for a cleat as it folds down vs. standing up sir. Please advise if there is eye pad in the anchor locker as it has been a long time since I saw it. Something tells me there is and if so, that is what was intended to tie off the anchor line.

Paladin, did you use anything like butyl tape under the cleat? Hard to drill through the deck? The thought of drilling just wigs me out lol.

The only thing in my locker is a horn cleat. I do use it to run bow lines port and starboard. Would love to add another cleat.

You can access the bow underneath the deck by removing the forward V style plate and unscrew.. If wedged tight be careful when taking it out. What ever you do, always use a backing plate underneath to distribute the load and caulk.

Yes, I used butyl tape. I LOVE that stuff. I got mine from this guy, it has recommendations around the various sailing forums as being better than the stuff at the hardware store...

There's a cleat for the anchor in the anchor locker, which is what the PO used on my boat to attach the dock lines. But it's a HUGE PITA to open the anchor locker and put the lines down in there when coming in... especially if the fore sail is flaked on the deck. Sometimes the river in South Haven has a good stiff current, and the last thing I want to do is fart around with opening doors while trying to dock. My wife agrees that the folding bow cleat is the best thing we've added to the boat. :)

Oh, and to your comment about drilling... yes it was terrifying. I measured, re-measured, sat and looked at the marks for a while, measured again, contemplated if this was really what I wanted to do to my boat.... then finally pulled the trigger. It went through very easily! :)

Mine has an eye (u bolt) in the anchor locker and also two cleats near the toerail at the bow - probably after market. If you are tying to a dock in a slip with finger piers on each side, here is what I do.

Two bow lines (1/2 inch 3 strand nylon) spliced around thimbles onto a stainless clip hook, that snaps onto the bow eye. These cleat off to each side, to the finger piers. Two lines with soft eyes looped around the rods that serve as cleats at the stern, and I cross them over and cleat to the finger piers. Two spring lines, from the bow cleat back to a finger pier cleat and from the stern rod on the same side going forward.

It was easier last summer, where I had a bouy.

I added a center standing cleat and chocks but I like yours better as my sheets hang on mine once in a while. Thanks for the link, Charles

June 28, 2014 Installed mine this morning. Removed my standing cleat and put this one in the same place with 2-4"x4" 10 guage SS backing plates.
