that depends on the quality of the aluminum cleat. some are very cheaply cast and poor quality, but some are finished fairly nicely, but steer clear of the chromed over aluminum hardware.... stainless is always best.

as for my opinion of nylon cleats, they have always served their purpose well and never failed me.... but when I purchase cleats to install they are always stainless...

Oreana,

Have you ordered anything from them? I'm thinking about ordering some swivel eye snap shackles for my main and foresail halyards but at their low prices I'm wondering about the quality of the metal.

thanks,
david
they are a good outfit to deal with.... they have been around awhile, and price doesnt mean anything in the boating/hardware industry, except to your wallet.
it pays to shop around because the pricing can range very widely for the same item from different suppliers..

and it is your boat so you can use what you want, but as a fellow boater I would recommend NOT using snap shackles on the halyards....
do an online search for wichard keypin shackle.... they are great for the halyards and they have a "captive" pin so the pin will never be by itself in davy jones' locker....:D

I have bought a bunch of items from this company. Shipping is often free and the parts come priority mail so little waiting.

I have snap shackles everywhere but on the head of my sails. They are awesome. I would never trust a nylon cleat that has baked in the sun for 20 years, but that's just me.

I have broken a nylon cleat on the mast and a aluminum one pulled off the mast because of too short screws! (Dropped the main fast too)
I would install aluminum horn cleats and nylon or what ever they are Cam Cleats.
I will be installing line clutches in spring for my halyards and lifts/ hauls.
Please install them properly.
Don't for get this stuff.
