Does anyone have a Hunter 23 with no bow cleats? The only thing to tie the boat down is in the anchor locker. I ended up jerry rigging a piece of coated wire and wire clamps so I could tie the lines. Not so effective. Does any one have real and true mounted cleats on the bow and if so how far back do you have them. I went in the v berth and you can not get to anything in the anchor locker to run nuts on. So I am assuming that you must have to go towards the stern off the anchor locker. I just moved the boat to a new marina and the slip is 30 ft the smallest, so know I need to get serious about how it is tied.

If you will review the photo array of this boat under Boat information, there is a picture showing placement of cleats.

If I recall, they were not standard on the wing keel 23 and had to be added. Drilling will be required into the inside of the boat. When you do, go very slow with the drill bit as you will hit the carpet. If you do, stop immediately and go inside and romove only that where the drill bit cam thru. When installing, use alot of caulk outside and put it on the threads of the bolts as well. When securing underneath inside the boat, I would use a stainless steel strap drilled to the distance of the holes and let the bolts go thru it and then place a washer and nylone locking nut to spread the load.

If the bolts are too long, cut them off or you can as a last resort, bend them off.

The previous owner of my H-26 installed two screw-in deck plates (see link to West Marine for photo and description) inside the upper walls of my anchor locker to access and install two cleats on each side of the bow, about 1 foot aft. This give you a good access point for installing backing of your choice. If your anchor locker is further aft than you want your cleat, you can even reach through the new access plate and install the cleat as far forward as you can reach with your arm with the backing and a wrench. I have this issue as well at my slip. I hate using the anchor locker cleat. That's what the PO did and I used it that way last season. I have a metal 2" ring attached to that metal post in front of the anchor locker. I guide the two dock lines through the ring and into the locker. It's highly annoying. I debated getting a couple of those cleats that fold down when not in use and mounting behind the anchor locker... but haven't decided how to fix this issue yet. If anybody has any suggestions for bow cleats, I'd love to see pictures!

Mine has bow cleats. I can't recall just how far back or where they are backed on the inside. I will try to check if I get to the boat this weekend.

I put in bow cleats on mine. They are just behind the anchor locker area near the bow pulpit. Far enough amidship to alow for generous backing plates. I've seen pics of them where they were even with the toe rail. I don't know if they could have backing plates there but I like that set up esthetically better. Additionally, when they are even with the toe rail, the dock lines don't rub over the toe rail like mine does. However, I'd bet you could suspend the bow with my cleats :D

That is exactly what I have done in the anchor locker and I do not like it. The thing is just a pure pain. THe anchor locker has no way to put cleats on so you must go past the anchor locker. Why 2 cleats was not added is beyond me. I guess it was another 20 bucks when the boat was built.

As always thanks. A novice at this is daunting at times. I still need to send the pictures of the rub rail I mentioned way back. I have the pictures on the computer but from were they are to get them to you.

I put a center cleat with 2 chocks. The center cleat has a 4"x4" SS backing plate. Pictures of it in my profile album
