Cleats for docking and windows for Hunter 23

Hunter 23 WK Claytor Lake
Hello,
I was finally able to get my new to me Hunter 23 into Claytor Lake in Virginia earlier this year. It did pretty good in the water. I had all sorts of engine problems with my Mercury 5 Sailpower that I had paid someone to tune up. The float in the carburetor was gummed up. Unfortunately, hurricane Helene brought acres of debris that collected around the marina on Claytor Lake where my boat was tied up. Here's a picture after they had already started debris cleanup. The lake closed so we didn't get out anymore.

I had two questions that I would appreciate some help with. First, the boat doesn't have any cleats for tying up. It has the two rods, one in the bow and two on each side of the stern (you can see the one in the picture). It was a little tough to tie all lines to these two points. Do Hunter 23's have other cleats for docking, or do most people just use these two points?

Second, I paid someone to re-seat the windows (they were leaking), and purchased the black caulk that was recommended for these windows. It was supposed to be a more flexible caulk. It looked like they did a good job. But, when we had our first real cold weather, one of the windows cracked from top to bottom in two places. It looks like a thermal crack, and is open about 1/16 inch when cold. I don't think the screws were the real problems, because they were fairly loose. But, maybe they were the problem. Has anyone had problems with these windows cracking vertically? You can see the very bad cracks in the photo.

Thank you for any advice.
Chuck N.

I am a former Hunter dealer fist located at Smith Moutain lake before moving to North Carolina. Now retired very close to you. I will be glad to assist as I introduced the first wing keel boat 23

For a small boat like yours, consider using the jib sheet winches as "extra" cleats. Alternatively you could install midships cleats. Used properly the winches are perfect midships cleats.

Listen to Dave, he's a great guy (plus he's a model railroader!) I had a Catalina 22 for four years and a Catalina 25 for 11, I knew small boats. Good luck.

I added midships cleats to my Mariner. I was able to find a space just to the outside and forward of the cockpit coaming that was too small for my size 11W feet to fit. And I could access the underside for backing plate (G10) and nut tightening. The midships cleats are incredibly convenient when single handing for docking, anchoring, and anything else I need to cleat temporarily. Very worthwhile addition.

At the same time, I added small stern cam cleats mounted on the coaming for the Tiller Clutch. Having cam cleats makes the Tiller Clutch lines easily releasable AND keeps the lines off the regular stern cleats. This makes access to the motor and swim ladder much, much easier.

Other cleat addition this past summer was adding a cam cleat on the boom for the topping lift, making adjustment much easier and quicker. Leaves the other boom cleats free for the clew and clew reef line.

Hello S.J.,
Thank you for the reply. It was very helpful. I was thinking of using the winches, but didn't know if this was a good idea or not. I've always had sailboats, but smaller ones without winches. I think I can make the winches work like you suggest.
Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

Hello F.W.,
Thank you for the advice on the cleats. I think I will look and see if I can add some where you suggest. I doubled, well, tripled up the stern attachment point this past year. I agree that it could use another attachment point for the two dock lines and the tiller clutch lines.
Thanks again.

Spoke with poster. As it turns out the boat is across the mountain from me. I spoke with chuck last night and he will call me in the next week after the holidays and will keep you posted

One possible cause for the window cracking could be the adhesive used was applied too thin. Adhesive like 4000 UV and even Dow 795, even though flexible, still needs to be pretty thick to allow the window to expand and contract.

Dow 795 was used plus screws to hold it. Possible causes are over tightened screws, screw holes too small for screws or cracked when pulling port off, etc.

I plan to look at his boat and advise. I did put cleats on 23’s in. the past. Poster has been made aware that SBO has the build list of parts for his boat
