Cleat bolt threads..

So I pulled one of the nuts on the inside of the forpeak so I could determine the threads on the wooden cleats we have on the vega....

Hmmm.... I went to the hardware store and tried to determine this. The 5/16-18 bolt was the only thing that fit this bronze nut.

But it was VERY loose. Are these, yet again, some ancient british thread that is no longer used? I hope not....

Could this be a Whitworth thread?
I just read that the old Whitworth and our modern 5/16-18 are both similar except the depth of the thread cut on Whitworth is deeper.
Is this why the vega cleat nut wiggled so much on the modern 5/16-18 bolt at the hardware store?

Hey GH,
It's a metric thread: 10x1.5 ...10mm bolt, 1.5mm thread pitch.
Hope this helps,
Peter

It's a pretty common metric size, but if you have trouble finding one locally I've had good service from these folks:

Thanks Peter, that helps greatly. I will go to the hardware store and try it out with the 10x1.5. That would be the much better answer! lol.
