Hi all, Not sure how many of you play here and at the Catalina 25/250 page, so this may be a repost for you. I'm looking to replace the stock cleats used to control my jib-sheets with a cam cleat. Did you do this or use another style cleat? Any advice will be helpful as I'm not sure of the load that is put on, say a 150% genoa. Thanks, Ed

Cam Cleats
I rigged my C22 with a CDI furler, 150 genoa, and installed 2 sets of Schaefer stainless cam cleats with a heavy backing plate on the gunwalls. I wrapped my sheets around the winches and made absolutely sure that I had a perfect lead into the cam cleats. One set of cleats are positioned for when I sail single handed, and the other is positioned for when I have a second sailor sitting forward of the winches. Works very well for me.

Why cleats at all?
Ed You didn't say what boat you have, C25 or 250. On our C25, I never used the regular cleats on the coaming near the winches (except to catch our spring lines when docking). In lieu of spending megabucks for self tailing winches, I bought and installed Winchers. In 12 years of sailing, I never had to use the cleats. Why spend the $$?? on cleats. Buy Winchers and make your winches self tailing. Stu

My set up
This is for a C27 but you could adapt it to your boat. I have pretty radical risers because the winch is tilted outboard, a smaller riser might work for you. Make sure you install backing plates or big fender washers to spread the load. No fairleads on the winch, so you can just snap the sheet on and off. The medium size Ronstan or Harken will work, I prefer Ronstan. I have jam(clam)cleats for the secondary winches, don't use them much. The small Shaeffer cleats, beween the winches, were salvaged from another boat and are used for jib downhaul and spinnaker tackline. Forward of the primary is the swivel cam cleat with fairlead that controls my Garhaurer adjustable lead system, they're mounted on an inboard genoa track, but I might relocate them to the main genoa track.
