I'm planning a trip down to the Clear Lake/Galveston Bay area in either March or April as we have Family in Houston, I thought it might be fun to trailer my 87 h23 and put in somewhere in the Cleart Lake area. We stayed @ kemah Boardwalk Marina last year and enjoyed it alot however I didn't have my boat along. Just wondering if anyone out there might have suggestions or information on launch ramps, favorite Marinas and sailing in the area. Thanks, and welcome back Crazy Dave.

Galveston Bay

You can launch your boat at the Clear Lake ramp on Nasa Road #1 just down the road from Nasa Space center. I believe it is a free ramp. As for sailing, the Corp of Engineers has recently completed the dredging of the ship channel and as part of that project they rebuilt Redfish Island. Right now it is just a small lump of dirt in the bay, but it's a fun daysail or lunch stop. Of course, you can go to Galveston and anchor in Offatt's Bayou or get a slip at Moody Garden (I-Max, Rain forest, etc.) Weather permitting you can go offshore, too. Depending on how long you will be here, you can cross the bay to Double Bayou and do a "camp-out" trip. Hope this helps you. If you need to, you can email me through the directory. Ramp

If you stay at the Boardwalk again there is a boat ramp at the base of the 146 bridge on both sides. Easy access to the bay or the lake. Let me know when you are coming down and if I am off maybe we can sail together. I have a 336 berthed at Seabrook Shipyard. Dave

Seabrook Shipyard has transient slips

Seabrook Shipyard has transient slips if you want to keep it in the water for a few days. The Shipyard si adjacent to the launch on the North side of the bridge. Standard $1.00 per foot per night. The only caveat is that they require $300,000 liability insurance to dock there. I agree with Dave the best places to launch are at the public launchs under the bridge at the channel (no cost) and a short transit out to Galveston Bay. The other launch mentioned near Nasa is up in Clear lake farther. If you are not familar with the channel, I am told you can run aground very easily if you launch near Nasa. Launching under the bridge allows you quick access to the bay by minimizing transit time. Kemah and Seabrook are fun areas. The Boardwalk always has something going on. Please tell us how it goes.

Would love to hear all the details. We're planning a similar trip next fall or spring 2004 in our own '87 h23. Mac

Had a Great time in March.

Dave, We went down to the Clearlake / Galveston area earlier this year for sailing school. Had a great time and got certified to boot. We did run in to what I would consider to be some big weather. 75 knot winds and 8 foot waves in Galveston Bay with 10-12 footers out in the Gulf. The locals may be able to tell you more about the conditions, but coming from Colorado. The Waves Were Huge! I'll try and attach a photo of our trip. If it doesn't work, e-mail me (I'm in the owner's directory) and I will send you a couple more. The photo attached is our ASA instructor. Regards, Clayton s/v Walkabout
