Is the clearer Cetol as good as the original? I have always oiled my teak but I am going to give in and apply Cetol this coming season. As I dont like the color of the original cetol I would like to know if the "Chrystal"? is as good.

Not the clear.

Colin: If you listen to the non-cetol group the will tell you that the only good cetol is NO cetol. There have been a couple sailors that have said that the clear cetol cracks and peels. I have used the Cetol Light and I believe that it holds up as good as the original. Based on these previous recommendations I have quit using the clear. I know that you have to make sure that you get at least 3 coats of Cetol on to make it last. More coats are better. As you know the big difference with Cetol vs. varnish is the ability to touch it up with little or no prep.

Cetol gets my vote!

Over the years I have tried more than a few teak treatments. My worst exp was with deks ole. I tried cetol over my somewhat less than properly prepared bright work.It did not hold up to the end of the season. Last spring we took all the bright work down to bare clean and bleached teak. Next was cetol time. we put on three coats and then fine sanded prior to coat#4 All I can say is WOW!!!! What a job it did on thirty year old teak. From now on it's cetol for me. Tuff Finish? oh yeah, I have no doubt we could enjoy this comming season as is and still turn heads. Hopefully my opinion will help in your decision. Good luck and remember, Summer is right around the corner. Paul and Valery Appache 37 Alkaid@msn.com
