Cleaning Winches

I have Harken 40"s from 2004 on my cabin top. For those of you who have these you know that you have to remove the entire winch to get to the center shaft. My question is do you know how Hunter mounted these in 2004 are they through bolted (no access panel below them inside but it is a soft leatherette drop ceiling so the nuts could be hidden there) or are they screwed on? Thanks for your help.

You might want to check their advertized specs to confirm but, as I recall, Hunter used glassed-in backing plates imbedded in the glass to which the winches are screwed.

Yes I think glassed in backing plates but I would call Hunter for your info needed.

For those of you who care I spoke with Hunter and the winch bolts are drilled and tapped into a 1/4" aluminum plate that is laminatad into the deck.

Hopefully Hunter used an anti-seize or a Lanacote type of product when originally installing the bolts into the threaded aluminum plate. My 1980 Hunter of course is 24 years older than your boat, so galvanic corrosion between SS and aluminum probably isn't an issue for you yet. But it was on my boat a few years ago when I went to remove hardware that was secured into the aluminum plates. Anyway, consider using an appropriate anti-seize compound when on the mounting bolt threads when you re-install.
