Cleaning the hull of a neglected older boat; the hull is cleaning nicely with some excellent 3m products (a type of cutter and cleaner wax); however the black water streaks at the bottom of the hull seems unaffected by the buffing; I'm afraid to keep on buffing; do I have to accept these water stains because it's into the paint/gelcoat someway...some helpful advice could lessen my work...

cleaning algae
if the black stuff is algae or something organic... use an acid based cleaner. Diluted liquid toilet bowl cleaner works well. Rinse well after cleaning. If the black stuff is petroleum or rubber based then I recommend acetone.... again, rinse well to protect the gel coat.
