No one ever believes me

There is a product in the supermarket called "barkeepers freind". It's a scouring powder made for porcelain that won't scratch. It also removes rust from stainlest. Just wet the rag, sprinkle a little on and wipe. Rinse and that's all. It even brought a fire damaged stanchion back on a friend's boat. It's pretty expense though....$1.62 and it's only lasted about 2 years. Don't screw with anything else.

What Not To Do

In my zeal for shine in my first year of boat ownership I used steel wool. Now there are tiny rust spots on the deck, maybe permanent. Later I was told I should have used 'bronze wool'. But I think Bartender's friend sounds better.

Barkeeper's Friend

I've also heard good things about it. I've tried some specialty stainless rust remover/cleaner but it's way more spendy so I'd try BF first. Here's a link to an online site where you can buy it but I think it's pretty common in stores. LaDonna

Try these places.

You can get it in most any grocery store or wal-mart. Sometimes it is near the Grilling section in Grocery stores. I've never had a problem finding it. It's in a yellow can like other cleansers such as comet or ajax or others

Majica

I was told about a product called Majica by a professional boat maintainer. Just spray or wipe it on, let stand and then rinse with fresh water. It is an acid based product that does a fantastic job but it costs alsmost $10 per can. Also, you must apply wax after cleaning or it will discolor or rust quickly. Its not available in West Marine or Boat US. It is available at Fawcetts in Annapolis.

Starbrite

I have good success with Starbrite SS cleaner and polish. I do the boat twice a year - it looks just like new. Available at most marine stores. ROwen

I wish I could

Figure out why people spend so much extra on "boat" products. Most of the time these products contain the same ingredients that "non-boat" items do. As for the cleaners listed here, I'm sure they all work, but until you can clean and polish a stanchion in about 45 seconds with no waxing, I'm stayin with barkeeper's freind. The sad part is, if it was called "boatkeeper's freind" you'd be paying $15 a can for it. Just go try the stuff.
