Hello all:

I have a 2002 Catalina 310 (hull 162) which has a very fine grained non-skid on the top of the coamings and the cockpit seats. This stuff attracts and retains dirt like you wouldn't believe.

Has anybody found a good way of cleaning the dirt out of this very fine grained non-skid?

Thanks!

Scrub brush and elbow grease. However, one of the guys I coached hockey with invented a cleaning device (I forget the exact name of it right now but he was on the show "Shark Tank"...very successful, too) and I plan on seeing how it works this weekend. If it works, I'll get the info out. If it doesn't, I'll stick with the scrub brush.

Reports are that Starbrite Non-skid Deck Cleaner works well. I have some, but the boat's in the yard, I'll need it when they give her back to me!

Jack, can't wait for your report. Always good to find something new. I also recently read a report about Totally Awesome on cruisersforum, $2 at the Dollar Store.

Concerto In Sea, my 2002, #189, got blasted with pollen and then a light misty rain which dried. Totally embedded in the "non-skid" texture. I used a stiff bristled nylon brush (shaped like an old fashioned flat iron) and a good boat soap. Agitated in small circles and rinsed well. Took a couple of tries, but it came out clean.
There doesn't seem to be a long term fix for this, just elbow grease.
Hope this helps. Alan

Practical Sailor recommended a car wash for your boat that cleans really well but also does not take the wax off and is cheaper than boat soap. The product is made by Eagle One and is called NANO WAX AS YOU WASH, comes in large bottles and you get it at auto parts stores. works really well and than for tough spots I use ZUD or a little Barkeepers friend..

That product does not seem safe to use while in the water or near the water. From the product info sheet on the manufactures website:

"Environmental precautions: Prevent spreading over a wide area (e.g. by containment or oil barriers). Do not let product enter drains. Do not flush into surface water or sanitary sewer system."

I would recommend the sea safe line of products from Star Brite and some elbow grease if you are in the water.

This is one place were a marine specific product may be worth the price. I've had great results with Starbrite Non-skid Deck Cleaner. It goes a long way once it foams up a little and cuts down on the elbow grease needed.
