Cleaning the injectors (follow follow up)

You start with a small, simple sounding project, you end up with... This is in regards to the 89 Yanmar 3gm30F The injector parts (precombustion chambers) will not "pop out" by cranking the engine. Several amateur friends of mine and I brain stormed what else I might try. Someone mentioned that perhaps running the engine a while and warming up the metals will loosen them. While the engine still warm, I can try to disassemble the fuel lines, etc. and remove the parts. Worth I try, I thought. So this morning I went back to my boat, placed the fuel injector back into the bore (the middle one of the three), hooked the fuel lines, opened the fuel cock on the fuel tank, and began bleeding the system of air. To bleed the air out of the high pressure fuel line, I loosened the nut that secures the fule line to the injector by one turn. I then had Tina crank the engine with the starter mortor. I was hoping to see bubbles. What I saw was: 1) A rythmic "psst" sound accompanied by a white spray ejecting from the bore in which the fuel injector sits in (as if the injector wasn't 'sealed' in place) 2) Dark smoke coming out of the air intake... I removed the fuel injector, took a peek inside the bore with a mirror and a flash light and saw no foreign objects inside the bore. I wiped the injector clean and reinstalled. I made sure that the nuts that secore the brackets for the injectors was given 14 pounds of torque. When Tina cranked the engine I saw the same two things mentioned above. My questions are: 1) Will having the engine be warm help me to remove the parts in the bore? 2) What can be causing the injector to not seat in the bore completely... 3) Is dark smoke normal for a 10 year old engine? especially when it's coming out of the air intake? Understanding that this engine hasn't been cranked for about a month now... 4) Any recommendation on which laundry detergent to use to remove diesel stains from clothes? Any insight is deeply appreciated! Thanks, James "will my engine ever start again" Marohn Seattle, WA

Sure thing.

James: There is a sure way to get this thing resolved. Hire a Yanmar certified mechanic and have him fix the thing correctly. I do not know how much time and stress you have invested in this project, but it looks to me that you need a pro to see what is wrong with the system. PS: When you get prices on injectors be sure to ask about rebuilding your, rebuilt ones and new ones. Sometimes the new ones are not much different from the alternatives.

It sounds like you are coming close to the time you trade in the amateur friends on a professional mechanic. To answer your questions: 1 - Heating the head MAY help the removal of the precombustion chambers. 2 - You may have a missing or damaged sealing ring. These copper rings are not meant to be reused anyway. A speck of dirt, that you say is not there, could be the problem. 3 - Dark smoke is abnormal, especially when coming out of a place called the intake. I'm having a little trouble sounding any smarter than that. 4 - I've been referred to a little dab of Lestoil on the offending spots before washing with any good detergent. I'm sure the engine will run again but you may have to make an investment in expertise. Don't be surprised if the pro has problems. You are not doing something considered easy.

Injector Removal

Jim, I'm having a similar problem on my yse12. I can't get the darn injector out. It't weeping a little bit of fuel at the base and I don't know how to fix it. I've done everything including trying to catch bullets. Let me know if you come up with anything at seanshine113@yahoo.com. Thanks, Jim. SEAN
