Cleaning Rub Rails?

I have gray rub rails that need cleaning (Rails have black scuff marks). Anyone have a good solution?

If these are PVC, first try a strong detergent.
If that doesnt work, then 400-->600-->1000 grit wet & dry sand paper usually works.

I've had luck with rubbing compound. But if you have some tar or creosote you can soften it up with paint thinner.

Rub Rai Cleaning

On my boat (2000 H340), I clean the rub rail with Simple Green, 409, dinghy/fender cleaner, etc. and a scotch bright pad. Bad scuffs and black marks must be removed with Acetone or similar solvent - but not too much. When its clean, I use boat wax to finish.

Use acetone. the black comes right off. then rinse. Also use on the fiberglass sides of the boat for black rub rail stains. Also rinse.
