Hi all, Wondering if you have any suggestions for cleaning light pitting from our mast, natural aluminum, while it's down for new rigging. If I can avoid the wet-sanding routine, it would be nice. Thanks. jeribelle

Cleaning pitted mast

I did our mast last fall, but it was heavily pitted. This is what the rigger suggested: Wet sand with an aluminun prep. agent (I got some from a local auto body shop), rinse/wash then let dry, paint with two or three coats of CLEAR, spray Rustoleum. I think I used 5 spray cans for a 47ft mast. You need the Rustoleum because the alum. prep. is acidic and the process of pitting damages the anodizing on the mast. You do not have to mask anything off because the Rustoleum is clear. Process will not restore the mast to a look of "new", but it makes it look a lot better. Mine has been complete for a year with no signs of repitting nor any signs of the paint chipping off. Jay Tracy
