Red Oktober

I have had my 25.5 for two years and have been bad about TLC. The gel coat on the deck and cockpit look dingy. From afar it looks clean, but when I get up close you can tell its dirty. Someone suggested using Soft Scrub. Any suggestions?

SoftScrub with Bleach works for me

The detailing person at my dealer uses the bleach formula and I agree that it seems to do a nice job. Wet down the deck, squirt it on and scrub with a long-handled brush. Then, let it sit on the deck for 5-10 minutes for the bleach to work. Rinse completely. My experience is that for some stubborn stains you need to repeat this treatment. For weathered fiberglass, this will only clean it, not restore the original lustre.

Foaming carpet cleaner works on the non-skid

I have discovered that foaming carpet cleaner can really help get the crap out of the non-skid. Other than that, soft scrub and a stiff brush, along with some elbow grease is the way to go. Justin - O'day Owner's Web

Softscrub too

I use Boat US non-skid deck cleaner as a general topside cleaner, and I like softscrub too for the stains. Works best on most stubborn stains and also works great on removing rust spots from the stainless. Some have commented that soft scrub contains an abrasive, but I think you'd have to do a LOT of scrubbing to really do any damage to the gel coat. For stuff that softscrub doesn't work on, I'll try a little acetone.

Don't use acetone!

Acetone will dissolve the gelcoat should hardly ever e used on gelcoat, vinyl, hypolon etc for this reason. Because of all the recommendations, I will have to try soft scrub in comparison to my ISLAND GIRL products. The bleach could certainly be a good idea to remove surfae mildew. I generally use IG Pink for non-skid- even removes chalk. SEA GLOW is great fo bringing back the color of white or brightr colored decks. Any new angles on the non-skid sealant? Jim W

seal the cleaned surface

I've used softscrub and tilex (both contain bleach) and Zot (oxcilic acid) to remove stains. They all leave a bright white surface that looks cleaner than new. However, they are harsh and will open the pores so that the surface gets dirty, mildews, and stains more easily than before. You really must follow up their use with something to seal the surface. I've always followed with a wax, but I'm going to be trying the Island Girl stuff next time.
