Cleaning Lifelines

The lifelines on our 2003 Bavaria 36 have a "gummy-type" layer on them. I have tried a citrus-based cleaner (environmentally friendly!), soap & water and varsol solvent with no success in removing the gummy stuff. One can scrap it off but it would take forever to clean the lifelines.
Anyone encountered this or does anyone have suggestions what it might be and how the lifelines can be cleaned?

Since I don't know what is the substance on you lifelines, I can only guess what will take it off. But I'd try "Goof Off" or acetone (carefully, not letting it sit long on the plastic or it'll soften it).

Acetone worked great! Rinsed the lines off with fresh water ASAP after the acetone treatment. They look like new. Thanks, guys!!
