We have a 1995 Hunter 336... Has anyone cleaned their Interior Cushions? Would appreciate input on the best way... Thanks..

Dry clean

Mine got wet when my boat (a Hunter 31)sank at the dock. The foam cushions had to be replaced, could not be dried out, but the exterior fabric was unzipped, removed and sent to the dry cleaners and are as good as new. I hope this is responsive to your question.

We have a cleaning service (the kind that operates out of a van) come and do our cushions. We lay them out on a tarp in the garage and they come a clean them and administer an anti-mildew agent. We then store them above the garage, uncovered, so that the air can circulate around them. Nothing is perfect for 20 year old cushions, but this comes the closest.

It had just been put into the water in the Spring. The marina did not notice that the raw water intake through hull valve had a slight leak at the gasket. They violated rule #1 which says always close the through hull valves. This was on a Saturday afternoon. On Monday morning, when the guys came back to work, they found that my boat had sunk at the dock in about 5-6 feet of water and was lying on the bottom. Inside the boat, the water nearly reached the chart table, but the boat was pitched forward so the engine was basically dry. Water soaked all the interior cushions. The marina replaced just about every electrical component, cushions, detailed the interior, etc. The boat is better than new but it was a nightmare. P.S.: I always close the through hull valves when I leave the boat.

laundry detergent

I've used this method several times and it works fine: Unzip the cushion covers and place them all in the bathtub; cover them with warm water and add a cup of Tide detergent (liquid works best) and agitate a bit; let them soak overnight; rinse several times in the tub and then set out to air dry. To reinsert the foam, turn the cushions inside-out and slip them on like a a sock. This works, is simple, inexpensive, and really drives all the mildew smell out. I generally do this every other year.

I'd worry about soaking in water.

Dan: I'd be concerned about soaking in water. In your case this may be OKAY (yours did not shrink). I have heard of many cases of the covers shrinking. If this happens there is not much you can do except buy new cushions.

I've been in the cleaing business for 20 years...

And I use professional cleaning equipment to do a hot water extracion method. Either take the cushions home and have them done there or find a company that will come out to the marina. I work for a large company and we will be working with the my marina in the spring to sponsor a clean up day and be available to clean boats at a discounted price. I'm sure if you checked with some local cleaners and your marina, that could be arranged.
