Cleaning/fixing a winch

It's 20 degrees outside, but it's a gorgeous sunny day so I am thinking about getting my boat ready. One of the things I need to fix is one of the winches. I have an '84 C22 and the port winch turns with difficulty; there's no ratcheting noise. This is my first season with my first boat. Any ideas on how to take it apart and how to clean it? Thanks

winch

You don't say what kind of winches you have, if you have Arco's, there is a snap ring on the top that will have to be removed that will allow the barrel will slip off. Sounds like the paws are stuck. Once you get the barrel off you will see both the springs and paws. If your boat is in the water you will want to cut out a hole(the size of your winch) in a plastic bag place the bag over the winch and tape it to the boat, if you drop anything chances are you won't loose it.

Rebuild Kits are available for most winchs at the

various boat stores and include springs, lube etc. and complete instructions. Also if they are Lewmar's info is available on their website.

The key is lubrication

John. The lubrication often disappears after a year or two of use on winches. Definitley get to a boating store and use a lubicant made for winches. The Q-tip is a good tool for cleaning out older caked-on stuff and a latex/surgical glove is great for applying new lubricant to many of the parts in liberal quantity. Bob
