Cleaning fenders with "brush cleaner"

Several years ago, there was a blurb in Good Old Boat magazine where a guy said an Amish guy used a can of brush cleaner to clean up his fenders. It had a picture of the quart can of brush cleaner.

Anyone remember that short article, and the brand of brush cleaner? I was googling, and found Sign Painter's 1 Shot, Sunnyside, and Savogran brands of 1 quart brush cleaner, but none of them look like the picture. Unfortunately, I don't have the magazine anymore, or remember the picture enough to read the brand off my mind's eye. Photographic memory lettin' me down, I guess.

I'll see what my local good hardware store has, give it a try. Or maybe it's time for some new fenders...

I have a book written in the seventies where brush cleaner is recommended for all types of cleaning projects. The primary solvent is tolulene in most brands. Make sure the directions state to clean it up with soap and water afterwards.

The question would be, what does it do to the fender rubber?
It solubalizes the plastercizers in the material, the end result is shortening the useable life of the fenders as well as promoting the accumulation of dirt and other equally abrasive material on the fenders.

While use of solvents such as acetone or toluene might give some short-term appearance of clean, it's a 'quick and dirty' solution which exacerbates the original problem.

While I too always look for innovative solutions to problems, particularly cheap ones, some things are just not intended to last forever. As I recall, Taylor still has a lifetime guarantee.

Toluene is also what is used in model glue

Because it solubalizes the plastic

paint brush & roller cleaner Ace Hardware best stuff I've ever tried and I've used them all. Least amount of effort, too.

Recently at the Seattle Swap Meet I wanted a single fender for $1... but the seller made me take all 5. With all these nasty old fenders, I didn't anything to lose and cleaned them with acetone. Very impressive, sparkling results.

I like using 'Scrubbing Bubbles' seems to work on just about everything, including my fenders. On another note, I am intrigued as to the Amish be knowledgeable about boat fenders?!

Speaking of fenders...the rubber rubs off on my royal blue hull and is a pain to get off. The constant squeaking at night Also keeps me awake. Solution: I bought the cheapest white pillow cases I could find, put each fender in one, tied the tops and walla, problems solved! OK, it looks a little funky, but it works for me!
