Cleaning Diesel Fuel Tank

My boat has been out of the water for two years and the previous owner only had a quarter tank of diesel fuel in the tank. When I opened the tank through the fuel gauge and took out a sample of the fuel it was a dark amber in color. I expect the fuel needs to be removed and the tank cleaned. When I took the owners course through Mack Boring for the Yanmar engine the instructor said that the contaminated fuel could used in your home furnace without a problem. Once I remove the fuel do I need to clean the tank and if so how? Thanks for your help.

Amber color is not necessarily deadly! You can have a service "polish" your fuel which will filter out sediment from the bottom of the tank, but I found that by using a manual pump with a hose that lays flat on the bottom of the tank, I can remove most old fuel, and simply replace it with new fuel each season. Be sure to use an additive to prevent further fungal growth.
