We bought a '93 H28 this spring and decided to do some major cleaning our first winter out. Well now the boat is out of the water and we are trying to get someone to clean the covers on the cushions. Despite the lovely tags that are on the cushions that say " Dry Clean Only" the dry cleaners say that they can't clean the covers or they may melt the mesh on the bottom sides of the covers... Has anyone had a dry cleaner clean their covers? Has anyone cleaned theirs in the bathtub with mild detergent? Has anyone ever cleaned their covers any other way? We appreciate any commentary or personal experience that comes our way. Thanks from Lake Champlain... it's 15 deg F this morning... can't wait til spring.

Archives?

Did you check the archives, there was a good posting on cleaning cushions, I seem to recall that they removed the foam, washed the cushions (hand wash or machine, can't remember) and then replaced the foam while the covers were still damp and let the whole thing air dry. Thats what I recall, but search the archives, there have been a number of posting on how people have cleaned thier cushions. Regards. Bruce Neon Moon

Cleaning Cushion Covers on a H-28

I have a '92 H-28 and I sent my dirty cushion covers to the local dry cleaner here in Ottawa...they came back just fine. I think he gave some special care...maybe less heat? I can ask him exactly what he did if you are interested. By the way, 15 deg F doesnt seem bad!

cushions

I took mine to the dry cleaners but mine don't have mesh on the bottom. The cleaner said not to remove the covers from the foam or I would never get them back on. So if you hand wash them put them back on the foam immediately and let them dry. P.S. I have navy blue cushions, I would never have that tan color that Hunter used for a while in the late 80s and early 90s. Mine are 11 years old and still look good, don't show dirt like the tan ones.

Steam Clean!

When we bought our 28.5 we steam cleaned all our cushions. Pulling out the foam was out of the question and probably not a good idea. Instead, we rented a steam cleaner from our local supermarket and cleaned them with the upolstry tool and solution. We took them out of the boat and did them at home and let them dry a few days. I thought it worked pretty well....much better than what it was atleast. Good luck. Michael Mathis s/v Bien Sur

Foam Miracle stuff

When I bought our H33 last winter the first thing my wife wanted was new cushion covers. I compromised and said ok but we should first try to clean them. We used that miracle foaming stuff that they sell at the boat or auto shows. (you know, the stuff they use to clean that small oriental rug with oil and blood and all sorts of grime) I took the cushions out and laid them on the grass and used the long handled brush on the large flat sides and used the hand brush on the sides. Well, the end result uncovered colors we didn't even know were in the cushions. After air-drying they looked brand new. She totally dropped the subject of new cushion covers.

Jim O Brien- cleanr brand?

I don't go to auto or boat shows I'm afraid. What is the brand name of this miracle cleaner? I have some 20 year old covers that are sound and I would love to be able to shunt my wife's importunities into something else, like an auto pilot.

Dry cleaning, indeed

I noodled around town and found a dry cleaners who (cheerfully) did the job. Not only was the mesh not damaged, the mildew embedded in the mesh came clean! Just keep asking around, but be sure to take the covers off the foam because that's how dry cleaners work. It takes a little wrestling to stuff them back together, but it's highly do-able. Cushion cleaning

We followed Hunter's advice in spite of wondering at the logic of dry cleaning vinyl. Luckily we didn't do them all because the vinyl came back distorted and shrunk. My wife had to redo the underside of the cushions with new vinyl. Perhaps our particular dry cleaner was careless but we wouldn't do it again.

Clean cushions

I cleaned the cushions on our 33 when we bought her even before she went into the water. I used my "Big Green Clean Machine' carpet cleaner using the upholstery attachment and upholstery solution. Water rinsed well with the machine and sun dried in about 20 minutes. Looked better, smelled better, and total cost was about $3.00. (I like that!)

More on Cleaning Cushions

There have been so many comments about cleaning cushions, I thought I better check with my drycleaner to find out what he did when he cleaned my cushions last year. It turns out that he sent them to an upholstery cleaner! Sorry if anyone was mislead by my previuos article. By the way, I took the covers off the foam cushions before taking them in, and had no trouble putting them back on.

Thanks all!

Thanks for all of the wonderful input. Now I guess it's time to search for an upholstry cleaner who will do the job or put some of the home washing versions to the test. Thanks again. Canadice Stein and Robb Newman

how we did it..

Hello Canadice, I'm the guy that put the question out a few months ago on whether I should buy a 95 Hunter 336. Well, we did. We decided to give it a good cleaning while out of water this winter and the cushion covers were one of the targets. We saw tags about dry cleaning also, but I trusted my wife's opinion and she did a few covers at a time in the machine using cold water, regular cycle, Tide, a little softener and all went well. No noticed shrinkage but noticeably a brighter color when compared to those that hadn't yet been washed. They were dried by hanging them over some old chairs. Thay are all back together now and we will scotch guard them before we put them back on boat. Anyone know where to get inexpensive scoth guard type product?
