I have bug spots on my jib from rolling it up with the bugs still on the sail. How do I clean these spots?

Cleaning

Hi Doug, thanks for joining the doyle sails forum. There are several things you can try. Bugs are organic matter, try some laundry detergent and scrub with a terry towel, you can also try spot cleaning with a diluted soultion of bleach and water. Remember to rinse with Plenty of water. Too strong a bleach mixture may tend to yellow the Dacron sailcloth, but bleach will not eat holes in the Dacron fabric. Don't us a scrub brush, as the stiff bristles may abrade the surface of the sail. Many Sailmakers offer sailcleaning as well, but there are never any guarantees to the degree of clean, depending on the stain and age of the sail. Good luck.

I Cleaned My Jib...

... and it came out great. I had a moderate amount of mildew, but no bugs. On a scale of 1-10 with 1 being the easiest, I would rate the job a 3-4. I soaked the jib in my bath tub overnight with a cup of low sudsing laundry detergent. The next morning I laid it out on the lawn to gently scrub the few area, mostly around seams, that needed extra attention. i then strung it between a couple of trees and rinsed it really well and left it to dry. It looks so good, that now I have to do the main.
