I need to clean the paddlewheel on my B&G speedlog - type Netquad.

I am almost certain that the paddlewheel can be taken out while the boat is still in the water,BUT I have not been able to find any instructions on how it is done.

All tips and tricks on how this is done is highly appreciated.

I attach a photo of the sensors. I believe the speedlog is the one to the right.

put a little ky on the bung on the left of photo unscrew paddle wheel and install bung a big sponge and or wet vac will clean things up if it don't come out easy take a swim and check for barnacle growth

If it is an Airmar transducer than yes it has two plastic flaps that close under water pressure behind the removed transducer. I've pulled mine and yes it weird pulling the plug on your boat. A little water comes in but not too bad at all. Have the cap ready to put on as the water will trickle in. As what suggests, keep a bung handy JIC they do not close.

To tell them apart, the speed transducer will have an arrow molded/printed on it for alignment. Its usually the outboard of the two, allowing the depth to point as close as possible to straight down.

Once you pull the pin out, you might have to put an adjustable wrench on the thru hull to turn it a bit to break it loose. THEN, it looks like you have the dummy plug to put in once you pull the paddle out? Pull the plug with one hand, stick the dummy in with the other, and once you have the process down, you'll get a quart or less of water in the boat. I find that less water comes in if I do it underway, but at a stop is not a problem. Ditto on the KY. I started using it in place of Vaseline- and you may find other uses for it on the boat. You need a brush like you find in hardware stores that looks resembles a toothbrush with nylon bristles. I found a brush that has longer bristles, and may be call a grout-cleaning brush? The longer britsles get into the padwheel when it's in the plug, but there should be an axle-pin that you can push out to clean really well.

Don't panic about the water, my transducer doesn't have a flap, so a squirt of water about 1 ft high comes into the boat. Kind of scary but it would take an over an hour of that to sink the boat. So you could stop for a cup of coffee in the middle of the procedure if you didn't mind getting water all over the place.

I pulled out the paddlewheel insert and replaced it with the blanking plug. Does fell frightening to see the water come in, BUT remembering that this is how it should be really calmed me. I cleaned the wheel thorughly and put it back again.

ps
I may need to replace the transducer. Temperature sensor does not work and I have not yet been able to test the knotmeter and log.
