Hi, I was wondering what might be the best product to remove the light brown stains that travel the perimeter of my boat at the water line. I moor my boat all summer from May to October. The previous owner only trailer sailed the boat a couple times a year. So when I picked it up from him late last summer, it was pristine white and super smooth and waxy. I had it out on the hook for 6 weeks before I had to bring her in for the winter. In that short time, the hull around the water line has turned a light brown. I can only imagine how bad it will get after 6 months. I am moored in Lower harbor of Marquette Mi on Lake Superior. This is an incredibly clear water lake, yet the brown stuff. Also the previous owner used velcro in the cabin to hold the cushions down. The glue from this velcro has smeared and gotten sticky gue every where. Is there some miracle product that will desolve this glue. Thanks in advance, Stu

Yup

Lemon juice will remove the brown stain, as will toilet bowl cleaner or oxalic acid (teak cleaner/brightener). there is a product called "Goo" I think. Buy it at the hardware store for removing glue, dried paint etc. Works great. Steve P.

Goof Off

Goof Off is the name of one product that works really well for glue and latex paints. Jim

Thanks Jim

I must admit, I thought you were suggesting an activity for my afternoon. I think I will take your advice today and goof off. You're right of course that is the name and it does work. :) Steve P.

Goo Gone

Are you sure that the product you guys are talking about is called Goof Off or is it Goo Gone? Because I have some Goo Gone which is great product but it does not seem to be desolveing this mystery velcro glue. Stu

Oh oh !

Stu, if the goo gone, and goof off aren't working I suspect it's not a solvent based glue. If it's white and crusty it's likely a superglue or polystyrene type of glue. Suggest if you can, a good razor blade scraper and be very careful as you go. Another approach would be acetone and then still another idea would be paint stripper designed for fiberglass. You can get this at West Marine. Granted it's expensive but it might just do the job. The goo gone, goof off etc are the same products and work for flexible adhesives or dried latex paints especially well. Don't believe they will work on all types of glues. A dull putty knife might work as well. Idea here is not to chip the fiberglass. An old trick is to tape the ends of the razor blade on the scraper so the points don't dig in. Take it slow. Steve P.

adhesive remover

I finally found the product that will get that tacky glue off. Adhesive Remover from "Ace Hardware" brand. It is real thick and clear. Brush it on and let stand for a couple of minutes, then brush lightly with a stiff paint brush to help lif the glue, then just wipe clean with a rag. Stu
