Chuck and Laura

Brian,
I was very disappointed to read that Chuck and Laura did not make the
rendevous. I had been watching for a post from them and like you,
thinking they are overdue. I just called West Marine in Kauai, since
Chuck had mentioned that Laura had been working there before they
left. They have not heard from them either but, they said that Chuck
was delayed in getting away and may not have left until the first week
of June. Nobody seemed to know for sure. Perhaps the departure date
Chuck gave in his blog, May 24, is not correct. They are carrying a
manual 406 EPIRB , 18 gals of fuel, and possibly a soft pack life
raft, but they weren't sure about the raft either.
Just for reference, according to Sidney's newsletters, Tarka the
Otter made the trip in 28 days, (2589 miles); John Sprague made the
passage in the opposite direction, Vancover to Honolulu, in 32 days;
Tony Skidmore left Hawaii August 1, the letter he wrote to Sid from
Vancover was dated Sept 15, but he doesn't say how long he took. If
Chuck's departure was the first week of June, well, things look
brighter.

If these people may be a week late,

wouldn't it be best to be on the safe side and notify the Coast Guard anyway? At least they can be on the lookout for their arrival.

And if they are in trouble, they are probably hoping very badly that we all notice.

So, has anyone done anything?
Does anyone know how to notify the coast guard and do they have the proper info to identify the boat? Intended route, etc?

Still no word? How long does the CG wait until a rescue or search is activated? Leaving as late as they did, are they still in the realm of their scheduled landing, or are they technically overdue?

I called the Seattle Rescue Center (206-220-7001) this afternoon and
this is what they said. Although they have not heard from Chuck and
Laura they are still broadcasting a Urgent Marine Informational
Broadcast asking other vessels to be on the lookout. This is going
out on HF as well as VHF. Because Lealea has only a VHF they don't
expect to hear from them until they get close to the coast. They are
also trying Chuck's cell phone number, and would like to have one for
Laura if someone has it. The local news media has been given the story
with the thought that someone may have seen them but not heard the
broadcast. C-130s on regular patrol are watching. Of course the
Coast Guard has been in contact with family members. The officer I
spoke with thinks that a 46 day passage should not be out of line
(they estimate averaging 3 knots). They have verified a departure date
of June 2. Although the CG is concerned, there is no indication Chuck
and Laura are in trouble and their EPIRB has not been activated.

The weather charts have shown a steady train of lows moving across
the North Pacific since they left, but I haven't seen anything over
35kts. This would be plenty for me but well within the abilities of
the boat and them. Tony Skidmore made the crossing in 40 days and was
stopped for weather. Chuck and Laura may have had more weather (this
year has been strange) and been stopped more often. We should see them
soon.

Hi Group,

I don't know Chuck and Laura, but I am just curious, since they may
have figured they wouldn't make the Northwest Rendevous, and they were
eventually headed for the South Pacific anyhow, what are the chances
they decided at the last minute to head South instead of North?
Certainly that thought would have entered my mind, although it doesn't
seem likely someone would do that without telling someone first.

Welcome home guys! As you know on July 7, I called the Coast
Guard in Seattle and reported you overdue. Please understand that I
did not take the action lightly; probably all of us have lost friends
at sea. I have, but have never been the one to call in the report.
At the time, I recognized that it probably was not my place, to be
the one to call, and expected, certainly hoped, that I would be
apologizing to you. It was a huge relief when you were sighted and I
sincerely hope that my action did not cause you embarrassment, or your
families unnecessary worry. I am glad you are both home safe.

No apology necessary Craig; and you weren't the only one whoreported us overdue. We appreciate your concern. and we are verygrateful to you and everyone who watched and prayed for us. Therehas been a steady parade of folks coming by the boat here at PortAngeles just to check to see if we needed anything and to let us knowthat they are relieved that we made it OK.

Aloha kakou,

Chuck and Laura

With all the others we rejoice at your safe arrival!

21 days mal de mare, huh? I thought it was supposed to vanish after 3.
Hmmm.

Looking forward to buying a copy of your book. ;)

Thanks Judy,

The hospitality we've been receiving has been truly wonderful. At
this point, it looks like the only help we'll be needing is finding
the best places to moor as we make like gypsies until next summer. We
will be in PT for a while and we have a credit with the Lopez Islander
because we paid in advance for the Rendezvous. Their policy is very
generous in that regard - as a no-show they credit our advance payment
towards a future stay within the next 12 months. Of course we will
take advantage of that.

We hope to meet up with all of the PNW VEGAtarians while we are here.
(And we will certainly be here for next year's Rendezvous)
