Chuck and Laura Rose & Next Year PNW Rendezvous

Mar 6, 2012

All,

I was on a weeks trip in the San Juan Islands and Canada with an
organization I belong to. This past Thursday we were motoring just north of
Cattle Pass toward Friday Harbor (I was on a large powerboat actually).
Looking off to the Port I saw a Vega we had just gone past, so I couldn't
see the name. When we were clearing customs, I heard LeaLea call the port
for a slip assignment. I immediately called them and I said I'd walk over to
their boat, once the boat I was on was secured.

When I made it over to H dock, I told Chuck and Laura I thought they would
have been far south by now. Seems that they are going to be heading south in
the next few days. They are taking a 15-year-old crew member as far as San
Diego (he is the son of a friend I think Laura said). After the stop in San
Diego the two of them are going to be sailing back to Hawaii -- probably to
Kauai. Then they plan to sail back to the Northwest next year. We had dinner
Thursday night, and then after went for beers -- great folks to talk with
about sailing.

Anyway, we started talking about the PNW rendezvous next year and they said
they probably couldn't make until mid-August. I agreed that the second or
probably the third week of August would be a better fit for me too. Hope it
can be scheduled a little later next year -- maybe both boats can possibly
attend.

Both Chuck and Laura seemed in good spirits and were busy getting ready for
the trip (Chuck has more paper charts than anyone I know -- he was
organizing them in Friday Harbor). Lea Lea looks great and ready to go.
Chuck said he'd try to get on the internet sometime in the near future, but
didn't know when.

I said I'd send this message to the alias.

Yes, July would almost certainly be too early for us to make it, given our intention to cruise SE Alaska next summer. It would be far easier for us to attend if the Rendezvous were scheduled later - end of August or early September.

But we all have scheduling conflicts. We will make it if we can. If not, we won't.

Thanks for the update, Chris.
We sailed into Friday Harbor yesterday, and heard we had missed Lea Lea by a week. (We didn't stay long as we had to catch the current through San Juan Channel on our homeward journey.)

I don't think the timing for 2011 PNW Rendezvous has been set yet, so now is the time to make suggestions! Hope to see you there next year!!

We just returned home from 10 days on the boat. Good to see Peter and Ula in
Friday Harbor, Austin & Christa in B-ham, but sorry to miss connecting with
Brian & Diana in Blaine/Bellingham.) We had lots of fun, but some wild
weather!!

Regarding the 2011 Rendezvous--
I sort of remember saying that Howard and I would make the arrangements if the
Rendez was south of the boarder, down old Washington way, and I have vague
recollections of someone suggesting Fisherman's Bay on Lopez, which we can
easily set up. But I want to throw out the idea of Deer Harbor Marina as a
place too for these reasons:

1. Mitzi and Bear could stay at our house--just a short distance from the
marina.
2. There's a covered dock area for our pot luck.
3. There are showers, restrooms and a laundry on the main dock
4. A restaurant isn't too far away with a great deck looking over the water and
moderately great food.
5. There's usually music on the main dock on Friday nights
6. There's a small store and deli on the main dock with designer coffees and
ice cream.
7. If Chuck and Laura come we have a rustic cabin in the backyard they could
use, or there are some nice (but fairly spendy) inns--the Inn on Orcas, the Deer
Harbor Inn, and the Fox Glove and some B&B's.
8. (Judy take note) the crabbing is good.
9. There's a fuel dock.
10. And finally, there is nothing major for Brian to hit or run aground on.

I propose the same weekend--which would be July 29-31, 2011.

Let me know what you think.
Sheila

OOPS, I hadn't read Laura and Chuck's message about July not being good for
them. We're flexible on dates, but lets get something on the calendar so we
can hold those dates open.

apologize--esp. to folks who aren't aren't interested in the 2011 PNW

Sheila,

Same for me. The reason I never make it to the PNW rendezvous is the end of
July date is impossible for me -- I second Chuck and Laura's end of August
date, though the weather can be a little unpredictable as we get into early
fall.

Deer Harbor is a nice place, but in the summer it can be very busy. So a
later date might be better for that reason too. But then, during the labor
day weekend things really jam up. (We were going to Roche this past Labor
Day Sunday and there were so many boats in Thatcher Pass (coming towards
Rosario) that we thought we were on I-5 going the wrong way!).

The location and date are great with us, Sheila. Deer Harbor sounds really nice. I hear there is even a mooring bouy there for Vegas ;-)

So now, because I am sacrificing lead for the cause by taking soundings in the state of washington in Simply Super, I am subjected to relentless insensitive and soul destroying humour (note the "u" in humour) by members of the local vegatarian retirement community? Getting low my friends...see you in Dear Harbour.

Just wondering if any decision has been made about the rendezvous date/s? We can come to either weekend, July or Aug, or any in between.

Are we on for the weekend of July 1st-3rd? We're trying to make some plans to meet some out-of-town family in the San Juans while we're up there for the rendezvous, so it would be helpful to know which weekend was decided. They want to make their flt. reservations.

Hello Vegaterians,
I called the marina, they don't take group bookings over the weekend of the
4th--which would entitle us to a discount, but I told them we never booked as a
group in the first place, so they said they have space now, but we should book
ASAP to reserve slip space. So, since everyone seemed able to make the shift,
lets go for the rendezvous on Friday and Saturday nights, July 1st and 2nd.
If you can stay a third night, it'll be fun, since the Marina sponsors a
fireworks show on the night of the 3rd. To Laura and Chuck I know you said you have no idea what you plans are or
whether you could make the rendezvous, no matter when it is, but consider this:
a float plane come into the Deer Harbor Marina from Lake Union three or four
times a day. If you come without a boat, we've got a rustic cabin you could
stay in.

When you call to book for the July dates, cancel the August dates unless you
want to come to DH then too.

Here's the link for the marina to make reservations on-line.

I am a little nervous about changing the Rendezvous date from Aug. 26&27 to July
1&2 only because I hope everyone gets the message, and that no one shows up in
August wondering where the heck everyone is. Chuck, if you are out there, can
you change the date on the website too??

I'm going to be a broken record for awhile reposting the info on the new dates
in the hope that the word gets out to everyone.
Thanks,
