yup is exactly it...i found that after about 8 yrs of constant usage, the spike gets a bit wobbly and the knife needs to be replaced. i love mine, is 3rd i have owned....2 were lost to sticky fingers.. is usable for everything except opening jars...
still hoping i have reliable crew---havent heard a word from one of them and the other is still pending.. could be an interesting trip.
mebbe i should wish for someone to help replace my packing gland in water so i can get out in time and not lose my mooring--i still need it for my ericson until sold....

If you have a Harbor Freight near you, they have a very solid Stainless Steel rigging knife for $4. I have one and it is pretty damn nice.

Those HF ones might make trip as long as you don't have to rely on em. It could end up costing a finger or two.
I've had mine now for over ten years, I don't really use it much, but it sure can undo those shackles good. The spike on it is just as good as new. Quality tools cost more initally but end up costing less in the long run, and thats what we all hope we are here for, the long run.
About your packing gland. Do the nuts need replacement or just a repacking of the gland itself? If it needs repacking you can do that in the water.

whoO0Oole thing!! spozed to have diver on IN WATER during procedure-- with extra toilet seal wax in hand....everything ready afore we start this mayhem....and in place....am having difficulty with crew arrivals...LOL....pumps on...lol praying constantly to sea gods...
