I am looking for a recommendation for a 2nd anchor that will fit the bow of the new 410. It is quite close to the bow and I am not sure which anchor would fit without damaging the gel coat each time I would haul the 2nd anchor up. Advice please !!

If you can get your hands on some back issues of PS, they've done lots of studying of all the anchors around. You can then pick what you think is good for your sailing area's bottom.

they can tell you what the anchor roller is designed to carry... but the choice should be based on what you anchor in.

you might be able to put a couple of bruces up there, or a couple of plows, but you're not going to be able to do much of anything as long as the imitation danforth that came with the boat is up there. I ended up donating mine to the yacht club to be used to anchor racing buoys, and then replaced it with a 20 kg bruce. I use a fortress for a back-up anchor, but store it below rather than on the bow. The reason I don't want to store a second anchor on the bow is that I use that second roller both for my chain snubber and as a place to hook up to when I pick up mooring balls. The roller reduces chafing significantly, but won't do the job if there's a spare anchor occupying it.

Anchors

I have a Bruce to be an excellent anchor for the river and most everywhere in the ICW. I use the Danforth on the short roller and have the Bruce on the longer roller and use the Bruce as my every day anchor. Worked reasonably well in the Bahamas, although I suspect a Delta or CQR may be better there because of the grassy bottoms in places. Paul Bednarzyk S/V Knot Again

Second Anchor

I'm sure glad you have two bow rollers. I only have one and what a pain. I had been using a Bruce on my 37.5 and was happy until I had some wind in a muddy anchorage and forget it. After 10 knots of wind, it drags . . and drags . . and drags. With only one bow roller, I ran into a real problem because it became a bear of a job to move the Bruce off to the side so I could drop my fortress which I carry on the bow to use as a stern anchor. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get a second bow roller up there. Any suggestions? chuckwolfe@mail.com

2nd anchor on h410

It depends - what is the first anchor? My 2000 h410 came with a 42 Delta. I was considering using the extra bow roller for a spare "lunch hook" but I'm not sure I will bother, as with a windlass which seems to work well I use the Delta for everything. Perhaps I should get a second really big one- any ideas out there?

Second Anchor

On our H-460 we have a Delta for the primary and a Bruce for the secondary which nests just fine in the rear roller. The 410 roller is slightly different but I think it will still accomodate that combination. The Delta holds in just about every bottom you can find in Abaco, but there are times when two anchors are needed and the Bruce seems to provide an adequate backup in most situations. When we need to run a mooring pendant through the anchor roller, we just lift the anchor chain out of the roller and let the anchor dangle off to the side far enough to keep it from clanging on the hull. It's a bit of a pain, but I'd rather have two anchors readily available when the time comes.
