Choey Lee 44 Keel construction

There is a neglected Choey Lee 44, with none or little chance of recovery. It had 3-4 feet of water in the boat for 2-3 years, and in the Midwest that is not a good sign. I believe the keel is lead encapsulated. Does anyone know if this is solid lead, and poured into the keel or difficult to get to. I am not anxious to knock off the keel and use a sledge hammer to pop off the glass. The specs say the keel is roughly 8,000 pounds. Ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure it's lead? My C.T. was iron punchings in cement encapsulated.

If you are after the metal you should know that a bunch of metal of whatever variety could have been put in the encapsulated keel and back filled with resin or cement. For a 44' foot boat 8,000 lbs might be hard to get to with shotgun shot or even spent uranium. Nevertheless, if you want to buy this boat for the metal you may indeed spend a lot of time with a sledge hammer.

sailboat data shows the keel as iron, much more in keeping with a Taiwan built boat of that era.
