Will be headed south for the winter in a few weeks. I normally use the Chesapeake Bay to get to the ICW. If I get some nice weather, I'd like to go outside from Cape May and come in at Norfolk. I was wondering about Chincoteague Inlet and if anyone has any local klnowledge of marinas/anchorages suitable for my 42' Hunter Passage. I draw a little under 6 ft. I've heard that although the inlet looks OK on the charts, the reality is somewhat different! Any info you can share would be appreciated!

I've done two circumnavigations

of the Chesapeake; one clockwise, the other counterclockwise. On the last trip a few year ago, we were heading northeast from Cape Henry intending to take the ocean leg straight to Cape May, but soon ran into a blow from the north and it got nasty quickly. We thought about going into Chincoteaque to wait it out, and called the Coast Guard for the status of the inlet and any directions or advice they may have about navigating it. They told us of shifting shoals there and indicated it helped to have "local knowledge," which we didn't have. They suggested pushing on to the Ocean City inlet if that was safe for us to do. We took their advice. Getting into OC was hairy in bad weather, but doable. Hope this helps.
