Just wondering what Marina anybody could recommend in the Chicago area for a Catalina 27 Tall Rig. I'll be keeping the boat in Northern Michigan for at least this summer, so I'm just planning ahead for the next year or so. thanks steve

Marina Choices

Well, where do I begin. I currently have my boat on a mooring in Monroe Harbor. The marinas in the Chicago area are run by the Park District and they hire Westrec Marine to manage them. According to an article I just read, there are over 800 names on a waiting list to get into the harbors. Your best bet is to contact the Park District and fill out the application form. My recommendations for harbors would be Monroe (moorings only) DuSable (docks only) Belmont(a bit crowded and hard to get in and out of) Monroe(kind of out of the way). Diversey is for power boaters only. Jackson harbor is down south and there is one behind soldier field that is nice and it's name escapes me, but it's very nice. I will get the address for you and you can contact them directly for the info. Be prepared to tack on another 25% on top of the prices listed for not resding within the Chicago city limits. More later. Bob S/V "Never Say Never"

Chicago harbors

Moorings in the Chicago area can certainly be had, but it's important to apply as early as possible. I applied for the first time in September 2000 for the following summer and received a mooring without a problem, however obtaining a slip may be more problematic. From what I understand, it's usually possible to get a mooring in Monroe Harbor(downtown), but other harbors may have a more limited availability. However, on my first attempt I received a mooring in Belmont Harbor (which I like very much and don't find to be difficult at all to get into or out of). Mooring fees for my 1981 H27 'Dulcinea' run about $1000 per season (I'm a Chicago resident). Oh, and the harbor down by Soldier field is Burnham Harbor :) I sailed out of there a number of years ago and quite liked it too, though I prefer Belmont. Chacun a son gout!

North of Chicago

There are some marinas north of chicago as well. Most of which, you won't have to deal with the Chicago traffic. That also depends on where you are coming from, or staying in Chicago. Both are a days sail from Chicago, so they are accessible for a weekend cruise to the city. One is at Waukegan. They have fixed docks and several amenities. There is also North Point Marina, in Winthrop harbour. I think it it pretty full, but you can call and inquire. I have added a link to the chicago area marinas webpage. They have contact information for the marinas around this area. http://www.chicagoboaters.com/MainPages/Marinas.htm
