My son wants to sail to Chicago this summer and live aboard our 25 foot Mac. Any hints for a poor college kid to get mooring or docking at a reduced rate.

It's a little late for summer ... but October and November in Chicago must feel like summer in Baraga!

Every marina in Chicago is professionally managed by westrec. Millionare or student, brand new or 30 years old boat, it's a dollar/day/foot.

$1.00/ft.! Seems like a reasonable rate for Chicago. I'm assuming water and electricity are extra, of course?

Well, that's for a star dock or mooring can ... there is no electric or water and the star docks aren't connected to land .... they are islands of floating piers so dingy or tender service is necessary.

I imagine there is a time limit for a transient, so for a season, a seasonal rate is calculated based on the harbor, the type of mooring or slip, and residency. A 25% surcharge is going to be assessed (that's how they punish the suburban boaters), and a live-aboard is not considered a resident according to the fee application page.

It appears from last summer's news that there are ample moorings and/or slips available due to the economy and a glut of new facilities at the new 31st St harbor. Interestingly, when I did the calculator for a non-resident at 31st Street Harbor, the non-resident surcharge was not applied. I wonder if it is a glitch in the program or if they are desperate to fill new slips. I would give that location a try, however, my preference would be Montrose (proximity to Wrigleyville).

As Scott notes that's the cheapest way to go, on a can or star. Wall rates are $1.50/ft/day. In the past they rented out EVERY available slip, so this was the only way transients could get space. With the downturn and the new marina, you might be able to find a slip on a daily basis. But I'd expect that to cost a lot more, the the OP's question seemed to rule that out.

Generally they are very well run but charge you for everything. Don't expect a deal.

I was in Monroe St Harbor 10 years ago and dockage was $2 a foot and a can was $35 with a charge from the tender everytime one goes a shore. Very pricey stay.
