I guess I could have thrown this in the message I just sent but I've been
counting and am starting to wonder how many Vegas do we have on the Ches.
Bay?

Hi James,

I am aware of 2 Vegas in my Marina alone (Willoughby Harbor Marina on
Willougby spit) - mine and Cley McCauley's. I've also been told there
are a couple more around - I haven't "hunted them down" yet.
Then there are you in Portsmouth, and several (I believe) more people
at the north end of the Bay (e.g. David Fuchs who posts to this list).
It might be fun to get together someday...

BTW, my Vega had been documented when I bought it last year, but for
technical reasons I couldn't have it re-documented. Instead I just
registered it with the State as usual. I am not convinced what the
advantages are of documenting your boat - it is very expensive
initially (even RE-documenting it after the purchase could have cost me
as much as $300 unless I had done all the paperwork myself), and all
you have to show for it are some numbers carved out of the front
bulkhead beam which is too soft to support the mast to start with. I'd
rather have some letters and numbers glued to the bow - they are easier
to remove!

Hi James.

As you may know, the American Vega Assn. began life as VODCA, the Vega One Design Chesapeake Assn. Although I haven't really checked, I would imagine that there are quite a lot of Vegas in that area. The best thing I could come up with was to take the membership list and a map and some map pins and go down the ZIP code list but I don't have time for that. There is probably a computer program that would do the same thing but I am not aware of any off hand.

For the record, on the current AVA membership list, there are 8 members in Maryland, 2 in Virginia and 1 in Delaware. Those are mailing addresses of course. There are two more with mailing addresses in PA who list home ports in the Chesapeake and no doubt several others who either aren't on my list (Like you), or who keep their boats in that area but do not list a home port seperate from their mailing address.

Much like Puget Sound, I expect there are at least twenty Vegas, probably more, in the Chesapeake Bay.

Hi James,

I have Vega 2933 in the Patuxent River area. I also have Vega 265 sitting on the Pax River navy base. That one is being delivered to the new owner in the spring.

I am another in the Willoughby Harbor! I keep hull #1476 at Rebel
Marine. This is my 2nd Vega 9 had to leave the 1st in St Croix USVI.
It would be fun to get everyone together, let me know. Mark

OK You guys. Will 2003 be the year that we have the first Chesapeake Bay Rendezvous? There have to be twenty or thirty Vegas within sailing/trailering range. Pick a place, choose a date, post the info here and I'll publish it in the newsletter. Anyone who has been to one of the Washington/British Columbia events or to an Albin Cruisers Rendezvous will tell you what a terrific experience it can be.

Really now, it's not that difficult. Make a few phone calls, find a marina with enough slips or sufficient anchorage to accomodate a dozen or so Vegas, get the phone number for reservations and choose a date. Then we'll get the word out. Once you get a few VEGAtarians together the rest will pretty much take care of itself. A restaraunt dinner or potluck can be loosely organized for one evening, dingy races and or daysails or races in the local area can be planned or left to happen spontaneously. The main thing is just to provide an excuse to get together.

Trust me, you'll be glad you did.

Aloha,
