Chesapeake Bay and Baltimore

I may--just may, if the sailing gods are with me--have the opportunity to regularly sail the Chesapeake from a home base in Baltimore. So, questions to your Baltimoreans and Chesapeakers: 1. If I'm living in NW Baltimore (Pikesville area), where's the best place to keep my Catalina 30? 2. How long will it take to get to this best place? 3. What's the sailing like in the north Chesapeake? 4. I haven't seen any C 30s listed in the Yacht Brokers listing I've seen ... which makes me wonder if there are many up there. ... 5. And that leads me to the question: should I (if everything comes about as I think and hope it might) sell my C30 down here or is it worth more up there? It's an early 80s model, worth around $20 to 25 ... will cost $5k to transport . Any opinion and any help would be appreciated.

The Bay

Brad- there are lots of womderful places to sail in the north bay- Baltimore is almost directly of the Chester River, Rock Hall, and a bit further north Fairlee and Worton Creek, the Sassafrass River all very accessible for a days run going south below the bridge you have a plethora of great places including Annapolis which has been known to have a few sailboats. I don't know where you will be living- you might want to drive around for awhile to get the lay of the land on the Western SHore I have heard that Middle River is nice. Lots of sailboats for "sail" up here so if you can sell your C30 for a good price in TX otherwise ship her on up she'll enjoy the sea nettles

Selling Price

I did a lot of research before buying my boat. Generally speaking, boats were worth considerably more farther up the East Coast than they were here on the Gulf Coast. A little on-line research would probably give you an idea whether there is a $5000 difference in selling prices between the two areas.

Sailboat prices

If used sailboat prices are higher in the northeast than on the Gulf Coast, does that reflect that southern boats get sailed more, and are more worn out as a group?

Baltimore advice

Not often that you see the name Nigel, but I guess that there are at least two of us reading this! Anyway to answer your question, Middle River is probably the closest to you from Pikesville, and the are plenty of Marina's and Catalinas. You should also consider keeping a boat around the Inner Harbor area, or I know people who have kept boats around the mouth of the Patapasco or on the Magothy River. Some even like Annapolis if you like the amenities there. Annapolis is less than an hour from Pikesville. In summary lots of choices and lots of Catalina's. Good luck

Never thought of it that way, Ken. I know I sail mine as often as possible, year round. I haven't found an odometer on it yet.
