Need help in the locations for the flux-compass on the older Cherubini boats. I got a new toy over the holidays, as I read the install directions on the Autohelm ST4000 they suggest that the fluxgate be mounted away from metals(Dah) away from electrical wire harnesses, windings on alt. speakers, yet be in the middle of the vessel to be most accurate for stabillity. Question: What have you folks done for your install, the boat is only 30ft. If I were to follow all the prefered installation requirements... I would have a sailboat with no keel, engine, fuel tank, battery banks,A.C. inverters, electronics, speakers, pots pans, tool boxes, You get the point...3ft is the requested distance from all objects that may effect the fluxgate. I am asking you folks to share with me the locations and the path of the wire pull back to the controller pad. I would like to have controller at the helm so I could interface with the GPS and Radar, yet they tell me to keep the controller away from the boat compass which of course is at the helm binical. Please share with me what you have for installs and how it works for you. I plan to get on with this install soon as weather permits. Thanks Guys :<)

Under the settee (on a 33)

I had to face the same problem a couple of years ago. I ended up mounting it on the inside face of the starboard settee, running the cable through the bilge to the autopilot. Of course this was on a '79 H33, but I think it would still work for you.

best location for flux gate

try using a hand held camping compass to locate the spot of least reaction, make sure to start your engine and turn on every eletrical switch to get all the power flowing everywhere, then move the compass around your cabin to locate the area of least magnetic pull.

Mount it in the bilge

Try mounting the compass in the bilge. It is very deep and it will be an ideal location on the centerline and low.
