I'm having a hard time getting a definitive answer on this question. Is my 1980 Hunter 27 a cherubini? Are all Hunters from that time period cherubinis? And if not (other that the designer) what is the difference?

Great! I thought so, but just wasn't sure, Thanks a ton. Were they all Cherubinis at this time?

It depnds upon the model(length). There were Hunters before John Cherubini was hired as the architect. And some models were taken over by "committee" before others. Generally the years from 1975 through 1984 were Cherubinis. You can verify by checking models 25 through 54 during those years in "Boat Info". In the Owner's forum I find that my boat, the H37C, was built from 1978 through 1984. But there is at least one 1985 there.

Maybe the last 37C made?

I have an '85 H37C, hull number 485. Last one made? I should check with Hunter.

Seattle Scott; I can't wait to read your post on your call to Hunter about production numbers of older Hunters!

I'd like to hear more about those pre-Cherubini Hunters??? When I wrote the article for Good Old Boat magazine, I don't recall any pre Cherubini Hunters. The first Hunter sailboat was the 25 and....oh yes, it's starting to come back.....seems to me that Seidelman had something to do with the first boat. Hmmmm old age memory is a bitch.
Regards to all my old Hunter friends! Hi Sam, hope you're all well and happily sailing

My boat has the following number:
HUN33579M82I
I know it is a Hunter33, Hull # 579, 82 model
What does the "M" stand for?
And is the "I" the 9th. month, September?
It is the M that gets me...

Mark,
I went to the link: don't understand what you mean about the letter M: i saw nothing there relating to it

The 'M' is the optional method of diaplay

Using figure 1 from the referenced page above, there are two formats for the HIN in boats made prior to Aug 1, 1974.

The first,, ABC 12345 1272
where ABC is the manufacturer ID code
where 12345 is the serial number
where 1272 is the date of certification.
There is no M involved.

The alternate version is ABC 12345 M73E
where ABC is the manufacturer ID code
where 12345 is the serial number
where M denotes the optional date of certification method
where 73 is the year of manufacture
where E is the month of manufacture based on the table:
AUG A FEB G
SEP B MAR H
OCT C APR I
NOV D MAY J
DEC E JUN K
JAN F JUL L

This is lifted from http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm.

So the M means use the alternate / optional method.

Hope this helps

Mark is exactly right. If you look closely you will see the 'M' description at his link. So my own 1979 is, from memory, HUN 37 074 M79C. Or a 1979 HUNter, serial #074, built in month 'C' which is October.

Got it!
Thank you Ed
Thank you Mark

Ed,
If you ever have to come to Houston, you are most welcome to sail my boat
I am a very proud owner, and will be taking some photos this weekend and make you all sick of my bragging...but since we all love our boats, I think we all take it with a pinch of salt
Happy to report I have a very well stocked bar and fridge in the boat
