Am I the only one whose shift and gear controls are installed backward?

So, it seems is the engine which places the dipstick in an almost inaccessible location.

It is a 1980 model that we just purchased this past autumn, when shortly afterward I had an accident which tore my shoulder rotator cuff and then winter hit. Only had the boat out a couple times, found close-in docking a challenge with the controls as such.

Not sure what you mean by backwards. Throttle on the right, forward for more power. Shift lever on back of pedestal accessible from left, up for reverse and down for forward. Standard on the Edson pedestal.

I may assume that you have a single lever system (one lever for shifting & throttle). If that is the case, the cables are probably reversed in the shifter are probably reversed.
