Checking out

They say the happiest days of boat ownership is when you buy and when you sell. I sold my h22 today. I have mixed emotions but wouldn't say its one of my happiest days of ownership. No the happiest days were always when out sailing - whether it was all going right or all going wrong. Thats what sailing is - my happy days. I will miss my 'Inara' we had many adventures together. I sold her to move on to a bigger boat.

I want to thank all who have helped me along, answered my questions, and provided encouragement. I won't go far and I will check back in.

I leave you with these thoughts:

The gods do not deduct from a man's allotted life span, those days spent sailing. ~ Ancient proverb

Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.

To me, nothing made by man is more beautiful than a sailboat under way in fine weather, and to be on that sailboat is to be as close to heaven as I expect to get. It is unalloyed happiness.

"The sail, the play of its pulse so like our own lives: so thin and yet so full of life, so noiseless when it labors hardest, so noisy and impatient when least effective."
-Henry David Thoreau

You did not really sell, you are just upgrading your adventures. I absolutely agree with the payback a sailboat gives. Reminds me of the thrills I got every time I took my corvette out for a drive, I always found myself taking the longer route to my intended destination.

I actually have two potential boats picked out (34' and 36'), hopefully we can get over to see one in December.

I am glad that we were able to help you. You will want to go the the bigger boat section but look at Jim Seaman's responses as he works on his boat all the time.

inarathree,
Thank YOU for your "80s H22" help, ideas and advice. I'm still jealous of your Florida weather as far as sailing goes, but I REALLY enjoy the change of seasons in New England!

Happy "bigger boat" hunting.

Sadly our '81 h22 which we've had since '91 will be hauled off to the breakers as I write this. T-boned by underage operators on an old uninsured jet ski, it was an ignominious end to a craft we alternately cursed when she needed repairs and then praised when she beat to windward with her leeward toerail buried in the froth. We'll recall the happier of the events for sure!

inarathree it doesn't sound like you are checking out of SBO but more like "Checking out other boats!" Just wanted to clarify :)

No not checking out of SBO. I am now ISO my next boat. She will be something in the 30-36 ft range.

If you have questions about the Hunter 356/36, Jim Seamans is a good person to know sir. Good luck in your search but one suggestion if you think it wise, get a good surveyor to look over the used boat for you. You may spend a few bucks but it would be good advice to know what you are getting.

Thanks Dave, my wife and I are looking at the Beneteau 32 and 34 and Jeanneau 36. A surveyor is a must! its one thing to buy a H22 without one, but as boats get bigger so does their complexity, and I definitely want someone else looking over everything.

Inarathree;

My wife and I use to own a Beneteau 321 after we got married. Ann never realized the work it took to commission a sailboat of that size. In addition, she will never forget the trip to heck transporting that boat at night on the interstates, bypassing weigh scale, traveling on back roads, etc with a wide load behind the single cab dooley with an employee to Annapolis arriving in tine before the traffic jams not to mention working all day to put the boat into the water and then returning home. She had enough.

Good to hear you are getting a surveyor.
