My wife and I are ready to move up to a larger and roomier sail boat and have been looking for a Catalina 30. We currently have a MacGregor 26D and don't like the head room (what head room ?). We both had a chance to crew on a 1979 Hunter 30' last weekend for 4 hours and truly enjoyed the experience. We have been told that, compared to a catalina, a hunter is a faster and better build boat. Specifically in hull blistering and deck fracture problems. Also, my friend mentioned that his Hunter would point closer to windward than a friend's catalina 30' What do you owners think ? Thank you Jerry and Janet Magnuson S/V Sallee Rover Billings, Montana

Go for it

Before buying our Hunter 31 we too looked at a Macgregor. However doing alot of reasearch we found that Hunters are much better boats. We spend every weekend on ours and just went to Annapolis. We have 5 kids and find the room exceptional. As far as Catalina's both are production boats but found the interior quality better in the Hunter. the speed of the boat was on an average 6-7 knots. Remember to have a survey of any boat you are seriously interested in. We were fortunate to have a perfectionist surveyor. We spent 500 for the survey but bought a boat that was in very good shape. He also gave us an itemized list as to what we have to do to make the boat last for years to come. Good luck : )

Have a look at a Catalina 30

There are always some on the market. Then you will know which one feels best for you. (We ended up choosing a Cherubini h27 over a Catalina 30, but liked both.) I doubt there is so much difference in performance either way. The survey is much, much more important on these boats. You'll love the move up! David Lady Lillie

Love our Hunter

We owned a 1993 MacGregor 26...we wanted to be sure we really liked sailing...we did! We bought a 1990 Hunter 30 2 years ago and have "no regrets". We looked at Catalinas too, but liked the interior on the Hunters much better. It sails well and is a very comfortable (roomy) boat...wow, you can stand up inside...you know how that goes with the Mac26! Take the advice of having a survey done....it saved us! And have fun! Enjoy your upgrade. A lot of grand adventures lie ahead!
