Good morning fambarstow
Not to sound condecendig but try pulling the dipstick and looking at the two marks on it. the one closest to the handle is FULL and the one further down is "one quart down"
Since that is pretty simplistic and I'd assumed you tried looking for the dip stick already perhaps a little more info on why you can't check it would be in order.
The dipstick may be behind another access panel than the one you are looking through BTW.

I located one Dipstick aft of the engine around the transmission. It was only 2 or 3 inches with no markings. That was the only one I could locate; nothing in the usual place and yes it is a pretty weak question but...

Dip Stick

Are you sure it is a 37hp. Because 356's came with a 27 hp. Yanmar. The dip stick is hard to find the first time ,but if your looking at the engine it is on the left side near the bottom about in the center, there is a Oring showing and you pull up on it. The other dip stick you found is for the transmission.

Ah, must be a GM. If you think it is hard to find, wait until you try to replace it!

I failed to mention that you need to unhook the steps and slide them over to the left side. That will make it a whole lot more easy.

Dipstick Location

Here are three photos of the dipstick. Follow the string to the yellow spot. It is hard to find, once you find it, put a string on it and then you can at least find where it is. REMEMBER where it came out so you can find the spot to put it back in! That is harder than finding it. I feel for the loop in the hose just behind the fuel filter.

Good luck!

I wish I had read this post last night. Just checked the oil for the first time on my new-to-me H356 and must have stared at the engine for about 15 minutes before I finally located the dipstick. And then re-locating the hole with my finger was even more of a challenge. Thank goodness the engine was cold!
