After a great day sailing, while motoring back, the cabin started filling with what appeared to be smoke.... I assumed that it was smoke since it couldn't be the Yanmar 3gm30f because the alarm was not sounding. Turned out the thermostat sender failed which is why the alarm didn't sound. The impeller didn't have a single blade left on it. The mechanic didn't see any damage, hopefully we shut it down in time.

Just had the same thing happen. I now have a water temperature gauge installed instead of the idiot buzzer.

The problem with a straight gauge, though, is that it won't give you an auditory alert if things start to go wrong, and it's not realistic to stare at it all the time.

A good way to go is with a gauge like the CruzPro T60 (http://www.cruzpro.com/t60.html). This digital gauge also includes a user-settable overheat alarm with built-in buzzer. So it gives you both alarm and gauge functions.
